Beschreibung

Our old shack isn't big enough to swing a tomcat in, and now that Uncle Tom has been laid off from the mine works, he's moved his brood in with us. Tom and his wife, Ruby Jewell, have six youngsters, and when you add me and my five sisters…well that makes for a mess of kids. Of course, Mammy hates to see Tom and his kids out under the sky, with nary a place to keep the rain off their heads, but she and Pappy works hard just to feed us, let alone nine more. How will these two Families cope with such and arrangement when Tom's wife, Ruby Jewell, refuses to do her part with the house chores?

Kinfolk Miseries

Our old shack isn't big enough to swing a tomcat in, and now that Uncle Tom has been laid off from the mine works, he's moved his brood in with us. Tom and his wife, Ruby Jewell, have six youngsters, and when you add me and my five sisters…well that makes for a mess of kids. Of course Mammy hates to see Tom and his kids out under the sky, with nary a place to keep the rain off their heads, but she and Pappy work hard just to feed us, let alone nine more.

Tom told Pa that the shack they had been renting had caught fire and burned down, and they had no place to go, other than here with us. So Tom has pitched in and helped Pa with the corn crops and tries to earn his keep, but his wife, Ruby Jewell, has a lazy streak in her a mile wide. She refuses to help Mammy with the washing and sweeping, and Mammy is plum tired what with all the kids running about.

We're lucky it's summer time because all the kids are able to bathe out in the creek. Our outside toilet doesn't fit the bill, and with that many people using it, I find myself scatting off to the woods to do my business. There isn't a blade of grass left in our front yard, what with all the kids romping around and playing. Still, Pa takes all of it with a grain of salt, being the easygoing type that he is. Mammy, on the other hand, looks like she is about to blow her top any day.

Every one of Uncle Tom's brood is mean and sassy, always talking back to the grown folks. I know Mammy won't take it for long. Ruby has not raised them well and they won't pay her any mind, but Mammy has set a good standard for us and we respect her as the boss and our mother.
