Beschreibung

Me, Saffron (My first year) is the story of Saffron, a female cocker spaniel, belonging to an English couple, who lives in France, moving between Paris and the depths of the countryside. She describes how she feels about both places, talks about her owners and the things she likes best. This is about her first year, but she still has a lot more to say.

After an exciting career in the legal departments of several international companies, which took David Greaves to Paris, Geneva, and back to Paris, he is now happily retired, along with his wife, in the South-West of France. He has three adult children, and four grandchildren, spread between Paris and Brazil.
Having originally intended to continue trying to clean up bad business practices, by offering consulting services in ethics and compliance, he instead found himself turning invented bedtime stories for his grandchildren into a book.
This book is an account of David and his wife’s first year with their adorable cocker spaniel puppy, Saffron, as told by Saffron herself.
Another book concerns a parrot called Rita, who escapes from her horrible owners in England and embarks on a journey back to Africa, where her parents had been captured.
If the books go well, David looks forward to replenishing his stocks of good Bordeaux wine and continuing with the adventures of Rita and Saffron.

Chapter 1. All about me

So, just to be clear, I’m a one-year-old English Cocker (girl) Spaniel, born near La Rochelle in Southwest France, to two beautiful parents. I am what they call ‘noir et feu’, which translates roughly as, mainly black, but with various shades of brown on my belly, paws, and around my face. Just like my Dad, in fact. I was one of five sisters, of whom I was the biggest, and the first to leave the pack. That said, I’m quite calm, well-behaved, and super friendly with humans, especially little ones.

My Mom, Olympe, was jet black all over, and was a bit mad. She was great fun and could do pirouettes in mid-air (not many dogs, or people, can say that). She took good care of me and my sisters when we were babies, but then seemed to lose interest, and went back to being, well, just a normal dog.

My Dad, on the other hand, took a close interest in me, right up to the time I left home with my new owners. We were, and are very alike, both in terms of our looks and colours, but also (according to my breeder), as to our personalities.

Both of them were lovely, and handsome (they’ve both won prizes), and I’m sure that they’ve made me who I am. However, my time with them was quite short (10 weeks), and I was soon off to live with my new family. I’d met them once before, and they had seemed nice, and let me climb up onto their chests and lick their faces. But on the day I left home with them, in their car, I had no idea how things would turn out.

My new owners are two people, and they both seem very interested in me. On the way to my new home, I sat

on ‘her’ lap in the car, while ‘he’ drove. It was all quite calm, and I didn’t feel too nervous, especially as I’d met them once before. But it was a very hot day in June, and an hour later, the car came to a stop. When they opened the doors, and put me on the grass, I immediately thought,

‘Wow! Look at all this space for me to run around in and investigate’. Even though I was still very little, I felt confident in these new surroundings, and quickly began to sniff around. There were all sorts of new smells - mint, figs and wisteria - so much that I can’t remember the next couple of hours. But when the kitchen doors opened, I found nice cool tiles to lie on and rest. They’d prepared everything for me - food and water bowls, comfy beds, and plenty of squeaky toys. So I thought to myself: ‘Well, this seems fine, but who are these two people, and will I like them?’

Well, she seems lovely. She talks to me in a sweet and friendly voice, loaded with lots of affection. Not only that, but she takes good care of me, brushing my fur when it’s full of grass and sticky things (even when I fidget), and giving me the medicines that I needed to take in my first year. And she plays with me when I want to play, doing silly stuff, which I like. So, I always like to stay close to her, day and night, and I worry when she’s not around. I suppose you could say that she’s become my mother - the most important person in my life.
