Chapter 1

The Beast of Tofino

A man comes to Tofino to find peace and solitude in a small coastal village town. He is taking a break from the big city life, taking time to clear his head after getting dumped at the altar, and to focus on his real passions - writing and photography.

But he stumbles upon a local legend of “The Beast of Tofino”, a mysterious Sea Monster who terrorizes the small town with ferocious storms.

As he unravels the mystery he encounters a beautiful, but mysterious local woman. As he gets closer to her he realizes that the woman, the legend, the town, and the mystery are interconnected.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  1
A young man enters the local diner, one of the only spots to eat in the entire town. “Clang, clang, clang,” the door chimes and he realizes that he is one of a handful of people in the entire diner. He is clearly out of place, a fish out of water, or a city boy in a very small town.
A big man with a long greying black beard approaches him with a coffee pitcher. He must be the host, waiter, and cook. Small towns eh, they're all the same. The big man greets him, “good day young fellow” with a warm small-town smile. “Table for one?” The younger man replies, “yes sir, table for one please.”
The younger man gets seated, takes his jacket off and orders “coffee please, just black, and a water.”
As the big man pours a coffee, and passes him a menu he says, “welcome to Tofino. So are you a photographer, an adventurer or a writer?”
“Is it that obvious?” the younger man asks.
“Yes sir, I know everyone in town, and it’s not quite tourist season here, so I figure you are here for either the storm season or for some nature photography. Or you are an adventurer, looking to do some extreme camping and hiking. Or you are a writer from the big city, looking for some R & R and also looking for a story.”
“Ha! Ya, I'm Jacob, and I am just looking to relax, write a bit, and maybe take a few photos. And you were right, I'm from Vancouver.”
“Well I'm Boris, call me Bob, and this is my place. I’ll give you a few minutes with the menu.” Without waiting for an answer he moves to another table, and starts a conversation with them.
After reviewing the menu for a good 10 minutes, Jacob, obviously a bit indecisive, motions Bob to come back. “I’ll have the toast, with jam and peanut butter.”
“Yes sir, the finest toast around. We get bread from the bakery down the road. And homemade strawberry jam, my wife`s special recipe. The peanut butter though, is from the grocery store,” he says with a huge grin.
Small town folk always enjoy a bit of change in their routine. I guess I am that change. “Thanks,” says Jacob.
After reading the local paper, and slowly eating his toast, Jacob is getting restless. “Just calm down, have another coffee, and just be in the present,” he says to himself, trying to calm himself. He is too accustomed to the busy city life, running from place to place, trying to beat deadlines, struggling to pay his bills - big city life - big city bullshit.
Jacob motions Bob over to his table for another coffee. “So Bob, not Boris, what is there to do in town?”
“Well, there are amazing hiking trails everywhere. I can get you a map. Or there is something called the ocean, maybe you have heard of it?” Bob says with a rosy grin. “Or you can talk to people about the monster.”
“Monster?” Jacob asks.
“Yes, the Beast of Tofino, as she is aptly called, and she is a monster of legendary proportions.”
“I’ve never heard of it,” says Jacob.
“That’s because city people only come here during the tourist season, and they’ve never seen the raw beast’s power, so it never gets talked about outside these parts.”
“So what does 'The Beast ' do? And what makes her so famous?” Jacob asks.
“Well," says Bob with a twinkle in his eye, "I`m not the best person to ask, but I might know someone who can help you. But I`ve heard that she creates a storm so massive, that one day our town might be wiped from existence,” he says with a dramatic pause. He is part cook, part waiter, part host, and part character actor!
Jacob, unimpressed, says flatly “so she creates storms?”
“Not just any storms, not like city storms sheltered by the tall buildings. But a coastal town storm like nothing you have ever seen before! Surely you must have known you were coming during the storm season?”
“Yes, confirms Jacob, ``but I guess I figured it would make for some good literature and photos, a good backdrop to a good story, you know.”
Bob, smiling, looks him in the eye and states, “well then city boy, maybe it is the story.” Then he puts the bill on the table, and walks away.
Jacob takes some cash out of his wallet, and puts it on the table as he leaves.
