The Perks Of Being Halaal

The Fictional Memoir Of Zahra Malik

BookRix GmbH & Co. KG81371 Munich

Author's Note

The book and the story that I am writing is not just some story with a plot. It is a fictional memoir of a victim who died as a result of Islamophobia in Jubail, Saudia Arabia. Please note that this is fictional the story that you are reading this has not happened in real life, no murder like that has happened. However, the real question is that why am I writing this book? I want this story to be the voice of those innocent victims, those lost children who had died as a result of hate and discrimination. This book is the story of every black person who died as a victim of racism, every Muslim who died as a result of Islamophobia. This is what I want, to show how much pain we are in, to share our stories, to share our rage. We Muslims have decided that we had enough of this hate, discrimination, oppression, and negative stereotypes circling our lives. We have tolerated enough, and we are tolerating no more. We wanna change whatever the hell is happening, no matter how many months, or years it takes. We are tired of fighting this battle. After reading this book, most of you may not like the way the writing was judgemental. However, if you are truly decent human beings who believe that everyone has the right to live regardless of their age, gender, race, or religion, then it shouldn't be uncomfortable for you to talk about your privilege or the discrimination that we have been facing for a long time. Just like you will not forget the 9/11, Jewish people will also not forget the Holocaust, black people will not forget the slavery, the American Constitution, the murder of Emmett Till in 1955, the victims of racism George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmed Aurbery, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Atiyanna Jeffresson, Elijah McClain, Shukri Abdi, Sandra Bland, and many others, Muslims will not forget the Srebrenica of July 1995, whatever is happening in the Middle East, Yemen surviving worst humanitarian crisis, Palestine getting bombed by Israel, the war in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, the Uighurs suffering in concentration camps, Kashmir suffering lockdown at the hands of Indian government and police force since August 2019, those victims of New Zealand terrorist mosque attack. I want to make these voices heard. Please educate yourself about how millions of people are suffering and make it your first step to unlearn Islamophobia and racism. Please spread love and peace regardless of anyone's age, gender, race, and religion. Thank you!

With concern for the lost and innocent victims,

Zunaira Hamid

Chapter 1

It has been three years since Zahra Malik has been dead, yet nobody has forgotten the terrible tragedy. The petitions demanding for her justice are still being signed, and T.Z.M.(The Zahra Movement) is now an ongoing movement and campaign to eradicate racism, sexism, and Islamophobia from our society so that another tragedy like does not repeat, to speak up for the victims who have died like her. T.Z.M was formed in 2020 as an aftermath of Zahra's death, founded by her parents Fatana Aunty(her mom) and Malik uncle(her dad)who could not bear the loss of their lovely daughter. It was founded to at least yet another heartbreaking tragedy. T.Z.M was so named after her in her honor, the unforgettable death, a story which will stay in our minds. I, Hannah Malik, would write this book in the honor of my best friend, who had the same surname as me, and strong connection and friendship that I still continue remembering to this day. However, before we talk about her death, I would like to give an introduction to who Zahra Malik was and why our friendship was so special.

Chapter 2

Zahra Malik was a sweet and innocent girl who had dreams of becoming an author as well as an activist. Her main aim was to change the world and fight for those who were oppressed. She was born on May 18, 2003, in Karachi, Pakistan. Zahra was my first friend in 2015 in seventh grade, when I moved here to Al Najd School in Jubail, but we were not close. It was then in 2018 I remember how I and Zahra eventually started becoming closer. Our class used to be one united class that was free of discrimination and bullying. We were like one huge family, we loved, respected, and joked with each other since seventh grade. Even Zahra used to joke with us and talked cheerfully. It did not come into anyone's mind that she has a deep side which she never revealed to anyone. I thought she was a normal girl, just like us, always joking and laughing. She was a bubbly creature, in my opinion, someone who able to blend with others. . However, the story of our friendship continued when one day my dad's atm card, and a huge amount of money got stolen. I remembered that night, we were at a family gathering at someone's house. Our whole family had forgotten to lock the door. As we came back to our house, what we saw was a huge mess. The door was open, and we were shocked and terrified as well. When we went inside, our house was in such a mess, everything was not where it usually was. We checked the drawers, the most important things were missing, the keys, our huge sum of money, as well as my dad's atm card.

Chapter 3

We were shocked. My dad called the police and told them about the situation. The police said that they were busy at that time, and had other crime investigations to solve as well, but they would try to make time to find out about the robbers. However many days had passed, and nothing happened. Plus we had a little amount of money. My dad was worried about how on earth would he pay daily bills with this amount of money. He decided and eventually sold the house, despite many objections from our relatives, our family friends, as well as my mom. My dad and Zahra's dad were close friends since my dad moved to Zahra's dad's office. My dad decided to tell Zahra's dad everything, who decided our family should stay with his family in Al-Khaleej(where Zahra's house).  We packed our belongings and moved into their house eventually. We had difficulty adjusting first, but the family's warm attitude towards us helped us to cope with our difficult situation, and we became used to living in their house gradually. Zahra shared her bedroom with me, Hammad, and Imran(Zahra's brothers) shared their bedroom with Waleed(my brother). Marwa(Zahra's three-year-old baby sister) and Fatana Aunty shared their bedroom with my mom, while our fathers slept in the drawing-room.
