Mohani Heitel was born in North India in 1945. She studied and graduated from Agra University
in India with Master of Science in chemistry. Thereafter, she studied human
medicine in Germany with further education in psychotherapy and naturopathies.
Besides her medical activity she dealt thoroughly with the use of mantras and
examined how the spiritual and healing power of mantras nowadays could be made
accessible to people. She developed thereby a form of mantra song which has a
harmonising effect on body, mind and soul. In concerts and through CD
publications she has made mantra singing known to people in many places in
Europe. During her many years of work as a medical practitioner she has
integrated the healing effects of mantras as a supplementary cure into her work
and wrote the book “Die heilenden Klänge der Mantras” (The healing sounds of the mantras). Furthermore, Mohani Heitel wrote numerous
spiritual songs and arranged their melodies, which are now for the first time
published in this book Vinay Sarita and the attached sound samples.

River of devotional songs
This collection of songs is compared to a river. In Hindi language vinay means
prayer or devotional song and sarita river. Vinay Sarita therefore means river
of prayers or devotional songs.
The soul of man in Indian philosophy is called as “Atman”, which has its origin in the universal soul “Paramatman” or God. Therefore, man aspires to unite with his origin as a river ultimately
flows into the ocean. The river is also a symbol of a song and life itself. It
forces its way through different landscapes. Plants and trees grow along its
shore, which give shade and fruits for living beings. Its water offers to them
the possibility of quenching their thirst, cleaning and refreshing themselves
in it. The sight of the flowing primary element of life calms the mind.
Therefore, people like to stay for a moment on its banks. It is similar with
the river of devotional songs. Each song is like a place on the bank of this
river where the listener can stay for a while, dive into the contents and let
him be carried away by the melody.
Many songs deal with the mystical love of Radha and Krishna. Krishna is the
incarnation of God and Radha his consort, who is connected with him in pure and
perfect love in her heart. This relation of veneration and love is called
Bhakti. Radha also represents the individual soul that stands in relation of
love to God. Love effects that one remembers God. The constant reminder of him
maintains the love and let it grow. Therefore, the path of devotion or Bhakti
is considered easier for people to follow, compared to an abstract relationship
with God. The path of devotion allows one to strike up a relation of human
nature with him. In this way, human love can be transformed on a spiritual path
to divine love. In the lyrics of this book God is considered as a lover or
friend of the soul. Dressed in melody and words, Bhakti – the mystical love to God – finds expression in songs. They often deal with the description of the beauty
of Krishna, his divine plays and miracles for his devotees, prayer for
forgiveness, devotion and purification of the heart. Different songs remind of
him in different emotional moods and ask for his help and appearance.
Other songs again are dedicated to the universal aspect of God. They describe
and worship him as an omnipresent form of consciousness. Some songs are born
from the self-reflection on the nature and course of life. They make one aware
of how people – in spite of material progress – become victims and prisoners of their own uncontrolled nature because of their
selfishness, greed, anger and delusion and thus again and again run into great
difficulties. The qualities, which lead to self-contemplation, peace and
spiritual joy, are sung of at the same time.
Although some contents of the songs may recur, they find, however, a new shape
in words and melodies. Every single song has its own expression of feeling and
character. It is like doing pottery: the same clay is processed by the same
potter master in such a way that the resulting pots have very different forms
and find different use according to needs. The emergence of a song was always a
happy event, and was often inspired by specific moments of introspection, and
often by the beauty of nature. The time at which a song arose wasn’t determinable in advance. Therefore, there were different time intervals from
one song to another. In the period of over thirty years up to now, 128 songs
were collected. Most of them reflect the traditionally often encountered form
of spiritual poetry of India, which are sung as Bhajans. The word Bhajan is
derived of the root word of the Sanskrit „bhaj“ and means „to worship or venerate“. With the help of Bhajans Bhakti – veneration and love for God – is practised. Towards the end of each song the name of the poet is inserted
into the lyrics, sealing it similarly like by signature. This custom goes back
to past poetry over several centuries. The name is exemplary and may stand for
anyone who sings or listens to the song.
Fluss der spirituellen Gesänge
Die Sammlung dieser Lieder wird mit einem Fluss verglichen. In der Sprache Hindi
bedeutet vinay Gebet oder spiritueller Gesang und sarita Fluss. Vinay Sarita
bedeutet daher Fluss der Gebete oder spirituellen Gesänge.
Die Seele des Menschen wird nach indischer Weltanschauung als „Atman“ bezeichnet, die in der Allseele (Paramatman) oder Gott ihren Ursprung hat.
Daher strebt der Mensch danach, mit seinem Ursprung verbunden zu sein wie ein
Fluss, der schließlich ins Meer mündet. Der Fluss ist auch ein Symbol für ein Gesang und das Leben selbst. Er bahnt sich seinen Weg durch verschiedene
Landschaften. Entlang seiner Ufer wachsen Pflanzen und Bäume, die Schatten und Früchte für die Lebewesen spenden. Sein Wasser bietet ihnen die Möglichkeit, ihren Durst zu stillen, sich zu reinigen, und sich darin zu
erfrischen. Der Anblick des dahinfließenden Urelements des Lebens beruhigt das Gemüt, weshalb der Mensch gerne einen Moment an seinen Ufern verweilt. Ähnlich verhält es sich auch mit dem Fluss der spirituellen Gesänge. Die einzelnen Gesänge sind wie Uferstellen dieses Flusses, an denen der Hörer verweilen, in deren Inhalte eintauchen und sich von den Melodien tragen
lassen kann.
In vielen Liedern geht es um die mystische Liebe zu Radha und Krishna. Krishna
ist die Verkörperung Gottes und Radha Seine Gefährtin, die in reiner und vollkommener Liebe mit ihm im Herzen verbunden ist.
Diese Verbindung der Verehrung und Liebe wird als „Bhakti“ bezeichnet. Radha repräsentiert auch die individuelle Seele, die in Beziehung der Liebe zu Gott steht.
Die Liebe bewirkt, dass man sich an Gott erinnert. Die Erinnerung an Ihn erhält die Liebe aufrecht und lässt sie wachsen. Daher wird für den Menschen der Weg der Hingabe oder „Bhakti“ als leichter erachtet, als in einer abstrakten Beziehung zu Gott zu stehen. Der
Weg der Hingabe zu Gott erlaubt es, mit ihm eine menschliche Art der Beziehung
einzugehen. Auf diese Weise kann die menschliche Liebe auf spirituellem Wege in
göttliche Liebe verwandelt werden.
In den Liedtexten dieses Buches wird Gott als Geliebter und Freund der Seele
betrachtet. In Melodie und Worte gekleidet findet Bhakti – die mystische Liebe zu Gott – Ausdruck im Gesang. Oft geht es um die Beschreibung der Schönheit Krishnas, Seine göttlichen Spiele mit Wundertaten für Seine Verehrer, Bitte um Vergebung, Hingabe und Läuterung des Herzens. In unterschiedlichen seelischen Stimmungslagen wird an Ihn
erinnert und um Seine Hilfe und sein Erscheinen gebeten.
Andere Male widmen sich die Gesänge dem universalen Aspekt Gottes. Sie beschreiben und verehren Gott als
allgegenwärtige Bewusstseinsform. Einige Gesänge sind aus der Selbstbesinnung über die Natur und Lauf des Lebens entstanden. Sie machen bewusst, wie Menschen
trotz materiellen Fortschritts durch Egoismus, Gier, Ärger und Verblendung zu Opfern und Gefangenen ihrer eigenen unbeherrschten Natur
werden und dadurch immer wieder in große Schwierigkeiten geraten. Gleichzeitig werden die Eigenschaften besungen, die
zur Selbstbesinnung, Frieden und seelischer Freude führen.
Obwohl sich einige Inhalte der Gesänge wiederholen, finden sie jedoch in Worten und Melodien neue Gestalt. Dabei
haben die einzelnen Lieder ihren eigenen Gefühlsausdruck und Charakter. Es ist wie beim Töpfern: Die gleiche Tonerde wird vom selben Töpfermeister so bearbeitet, dass die daraus entstehenden Töpfe ganz verschiedene Formen bekommen und dem Bedarf entsprechend auch
unterschiedlichen Gebrauch finden.

Shree Krishna1, you are my teacher of wisdom.
As eternal divinity you are the teacher of the world.
Dispel the darkness from the spirit, remove all doubt and anxiety.
I stand before your door.
Without devotion2 to you how should our bonds of the world fall off?
The songs of devotion are dedicated to you, oh Krishna, master of all Yogas.

In Mohani’s internal temple he may reside,
regardless whether she is in her home country or abroad.
Because where he is, there is also Vrindavan,
as he carries the whole creation on his chest.
