Exploring the extraordinary richness of Van Gogh's writings and depth of his thinking on creativity, art and beauty. Vincent van Gogh's paintings are amongst the most iconic and admired in the world. The trials of his life and health are endlessly discussed but the extraordinary richness of his writings and depth of his thinking on creativity, art and beauty is less explored. Creative Inspiration, Van Gogh's writings have been edited and selected to create an enlightening, uplifting and helpful book for art lovers and creatives - amateurs and professionals alike. 150 carefully selected images illustrate these quotes, focusing on the sketches and drawings that reveal the rigour and ambition with which he approached his work. The book is thematically divided - from Beginnings to Routine to Beauty - and his determination and charisma are shared through words and pictures. A beautiful and delightfully handy art book that is designed to inspire. Please note this is a fixed-format ebook with colour images and may not be well-suited for older e-readers.

Note from the Editor
As I read Vincent van Gogh’s letters –usually in quiet afternoon stretches – it waseasy to forget my task of selecting lines forthis book. Instead, I read them perhapsa little too slowly, one by one, becomingdeeply invested in the daily thoughts, struggles and ideas of this artist-in-process.Somehow, he so deftly illuminated manyof my own ruminations all these decadeslater: how to have patience in one’swork, how to face the daily challenge ofuncertainty, how to learn and grow throughpersistent practice, among others. I cameto understand – as so many before me have– the depth of Van Gogh’s brilliance andpassion through his words. It is my hopethat the lines selected for this collectionoffer you a window into his world – onefull of remarkable vision, convictionand hope.

Each quote was selected from Van Gogh’sletters, which are curated and translatedfrom Dutch and French to Englishby the Van Gogh Letters Project. Thecollection contains all Van Gogh’s survivingcorrespondence – 1,750 letters writtenand received between 1853 and 1890.The majority were written by Vincent tohis beloved brother, Theo. And thanks toTheo, ‘the great collector in the family’, theyhave survived.
The images chosen to accompany VanGogh’s words were selected from thecollection of the artist’s sketches at theVan Gogh Museum. Each pencil mark istestimony to Van Gogh’s commitment topractice – reminders that we shouldn’t fearthe blank page. We must begin, foreverbreaking the spell of ‘I can’t’.

WHY CREATE?
‘… I’m an artist … those words naturallyimply always seeking without ever fullyfinding. It’s the exact opposite of saying,
“I know it already, I’ve already found it”.To the best of my knowledge, those wordsmean “I seek, I pursue, my heart is in it”.’

WHY CREATE?
‘I know no better definition of the wordArt than this, “Art is man added to nature”,nature, reality, truth, but with a meaning, with an interpretation, with a characterthat the artist brings out and to which hegives expression, which he sets free, whichhe unravels, releases, elucidates.’

WHY CREATE?
‘Painting is just as good a profession bywhich to earn a living as, for example, smith or doctor. An artist, in any case,is the exact opposite of someone livinga life of leisure, and as I said, if one wantsto draw a parallel, then either a smith ora doctor corresponds more closely.’

WHY CREATE?
‘Anyway, it’s not a bad idea for you to wantto become an artist, because if one hasfire in one, and soul, one can’t keep stiflingthem and – one would rather burn thansuffocate. What’s inside must get out.’
