Die drei ??? und ihre Mitschüler aus dem Filmkurs suchen dringend nach einem Drehort für ihren Horrorfilm. Schließlich finden sie das große, verlassene Haus des Puppenspielers, in dem sie drehen und wohnen können.

Doch die alte Witwe des Puppenspielers warnt die Jugendlichen, denn schauerliche Dinge sind in dem Haus geschehen. Eine Frau ist im Pool ertrunken und die unheimlichen Marionetten, die im Haus hängen, führen nachts ein Eigenleben. Auf keinen Fall darf der Bannkreis aus Kreide um die Puppen verwischt werden! Ist die geheimnisvolle Legende über die Puppen und den Tod wirklich wahr? Wird einer der Jugendlichen sterben müssen? Und welche Rolle spielt der unheimliche Pool im Innenhof des Hauses?

Die drei ??? glauben nicht an einen Spuk und gehen den Ereignissen auf den Grund. Doch dann gerät ausgerechnet einer der Detektive in den Bann einer unerklärlichen Macht.

Haben die Marionetten am Ende doch ihre Finger im Spiel? Oder ist ihr Gegner niemand geringeres als der Tod selbst? Die drei ??? können sich auf haarsträubende Ermittlungen gefasst machen!

Auftretende Personen

Justus Jonas

Justus ist der Anführer der drei ???. Seit dem frühen Tod seiner Eltern lebt er bei seiner Tante und seinem Onkel in der kalifornischen Küstenstadt Rocky Beach. Justus ist überdurchschnittlich intelligent und betreibt gerne Denksport. Mit anderen Sportarten kann er weniger anfangen. Er ist leicht übergewichtig.

Peter Shaw

Peter ist der zweite Detektiv. Er ist sehr sportlich, hochgewachsen und fast immer gut gelaunt. Im Gegensatz zu Justus ist Peter nicht ganz überzeugt, dass es für alle Phänomene eine logische Erklärung gibt. Daher ist er lieber etwas vorsichtig, wenn es um unheimliche Ereignisse geht.

Bob Andrew

Bob ist bei den drei ??? für Recherchen und Archiv zuständig. Das bedeutet, dass er in der Bibliothek und im Internet Informationen sammelt und die Fälle der drei ??? dokumentiert. Bob ist sehr gewissenhaft. Er interessiert sich für Rockmusik und liest gerne.

Mrs Sciutto

Die alte Dame besitzt ein einsames Haus an der Küste. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes war ihr das Haus zu unheimlich. Sie wohnt daher in einem Appartement in Los Angeles.

Frank Norman

Frank hat schwarze Haare und ist leicht übergewichtig. Genau wie Justus Jonas interessiert er sich für Wissenschaft und Technik.

Latona Jackson

Das dunkelhaarige Mädchen ist sehr selbstbewusst. Sie ist ein Jahr älter als die drei ??? und hat schon mal einen Schulverweis bekommen.

Mary-Ann Leigh

Die blonde Mary-Ann ist sehr abergläubisch. Im Haus von Mrs Sciutto fühlt sie sich daher nicht sehr wohl.

Zack Martin

Der Junge mit den braunen Haaren kann manchmal eine Nervensäge sein. Leider gehört auch er zum Filmteam dazu.

Frederico Sciutto

Der Sohn von Mrs Sciutto ist vor ein paar Jahren ums Leben gekommen … oder doch nicht?

Kitty Peterson

Kittys Eltern betreiben eine kleine Pension in der Nähe von Rocky Beach. Da sie Bob mag, hilft sie ihm gern mit Informationen weiter.

Mr Torrance

Mr Torrance hat eine kleine Werkstadt, in der er alte Spielzeuge repariert. Er kennt sich auch mit Marionetten gut aus.

1. No Escape!

Justus Jonas steps slowly from the darkness into the light. Dust hovers in the warm air.

“You cannot escape me! No one escapes me! The next house is miles away!” Justus goes to a wardrobe – the only piece of furniture around. He violently whips open the door. “So, who do we have here?” He looks at Peter, who presses himself against the back wall.

“Let me live!” begs Peter. Justus looks up towards the ax in his hands. “Give me one good reason!”

“I … I …,” stammers the Second Investigator. “I know Judo!”

“And you think that will stop me?” asks Justus. “Do you think you can escape death?”

Peter doesn’t answer. The ax swipes down towards him. With cat-like reflexes, Peter dodges the ax. He dives under the First Investigator’s outstretched arms and then tries to pry the ax out of his hands. However, while making his move, Peter doesn’t notice the ropes hanging from the ceiling. He gets tangled up in them and falls to the ground. “Whoops!”

“You should watch where you’re going when you run!” recommends Justus. He puts the ax down, grinning.

“I couldn’t see because of the lights,” says Peter defensively, as he picks himself up off the ground.

“As far as I know, ropes aren’t included in the script,” says Mrs Robinson, the film and theater director, as she steps onto the stage.

“The real reason for these problems is that we don’t have a real filming location!” answers Zack Martin. The brown-haired boy is among the students taking a film course at Rocky Beach High School. To this point, the group has had very little go as planned. They still haven’t been able to find a suitable location for filming their movie and are holding their rehearsals in the school’s auditorium in the meantime. As if that weren’t enough, two of their fellow student actors are sick.

“We also need a replacement for Kelly,” says Bob Andrews. “Otherwise we’ll have to leave the role for the witch out of the script.”

Mrs Robinson smiles. “I think I can find us some help for that last bit.” She turns to the black-haired girl standing behind her. She is tall and wearing a black t-shirt with the words Don’t mess with the Goddess. Justus, Peter, and Bob recognize her. The girl’s name is Latona Johnson and she is in the grade above them.

“Well, today is my lucky day,” says Zack, grinning at the sight of Latona.

“This is your new team,” explains Mrs Robinson. Then she adds: “Would you like to introduce yourself?”

The girl tosses her hair over her shoulder and looks at each of the others with her ice-blue eyes. “If I absolutely have to. You already know my name. And just so we’re clear, I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t have to, but the principal is basically forcing me to join in.”

“Well, everybody gets a second chance,” says Mrs Robinson. “These are the students working on the film. Peter Shaw has been with us from the start, just like Bob Andrews, Mary-Ann Leigh, Zack Martin, and Frank Norman. Dean Simon and Kelly Madigan wanted to be involved, but they are both sick. As a replacement, we’ve added Justus Jonas to the group.”

“Nice. So, where are we going to film this at?” asks Latona, clearly bored.

“Nowhere at the moment, since we haven’t found the right house yet,” answers Zack somewhat frustrated. “We are actually hoping to film it all this weekend.”

“I might have a solution for that!” exclaims Mary-Ann, a girl wearing a summer dress. Everyone turns to look at Mary-Ann, which makes her a bit uncomfortable. She searches hectically through her purse.

“I have a number for an old lady who might let us use her house for free. I wanted to give her a call after the rehearsal.”

“In that case, the rehearsal is officially over!” says Zack with renewed hope.

“Alright, great,” says Mrs Robinson cheerfully. “While Mary-Ann makes the call, why don’t we go to the media room and gather the equipment we will need. Frank, have you thought about whether you would like to direct the film alongside of your role?”

The slightly chubby, black-haired boy with a serious look steps towards the teacher. “Yes, I think that would be an interesting experience.”

“Sometimes Frank reminds me of you, Justus,” says Peter quietly as they walk to the media room. “Not just from the way you look. He also uses lots of foreign words and gets really good grades.”

“We are in the same Physics class together,” says Bob. “And he is really good. I think he wants to be a scientist once he is done with school.”

Justus turns to look at Zack. The boy is loudly explaining something from the script to Latona.

“No Escape from Hell is pure horror. The story is about a gang of four youths from Los Angeles, who follow a bank robber to the coastal mountains. He hides out in a house, but a witch lives there! She conjures a spirit that takes possession of one of the boys from the group. Because of the spirit, the possessed boy tries to kill the others. In the end, the hero rescues his girlfriend and the possessed boy kills the witch.”

At that moment, the door opens and Mary-Ann comes into the media room. She has a worried look on her face.

“We didn’t get the house?” asks Peter disappointed.

“Oh, we did. I talked with Mrs Sciutto. She was very nice. We have a location for our film!”

“And? What kind of house is it then?”

“It’s perfect! The house stands by itself on the coast, not very far away from here. The old lady said that she has been living in an apartment for the past few years because she can’t take care of such a big house on her own. The house is empty, but it still has electricity and running water.”

“So we have the house all to ourselves?” asks Bob.

“Yes! We can spend the whole weekend there and film.”

“That really does sound perfect!” agrees Peter.

Mary-Ann plays nervously with her hair. “I could go to Mrs Sciutto’s today and pick up the key.”

“Well, that sounds great, Mary – no reason to look so worried,” says Zack as he pats the blond girl on the shoulder. She moves away from him. “There’s a catch.”

“What is it?”

“Mrs Sciutto’s deceased husband was a famous carny. His puppets are still at the house. The old lady warned us not to get too close to them.”

“Of course! They’re probably worth a lot of money,” says Frank. “Strange that she didn’t take them with her when she moved.”

“She was happy to be able to leave them behind,” says Mary-Ann as her voice drops almost to a whisper. “In fact, she says that the puppets are dangerous!”

“Dangerous?” asks Peter somewhat confused.

“Yes, that’s what she said. And she mentioned something else too.” Mary-Ann pauses a moment before continuing: “She said that it could be a matter of life and death!”

2. Spooky Legends

“So why exactly do we have to pick up this key now?” Peter asks the First Investigator. The Three Investigators get out of Bob’s Beetle. They had picked up the old woman’s address from Mary-Ann right after the filming session. The woman lives in a residential complex in West Hollywood.

“You don’t really think this is another case for the Three Investigators, do you?” asks Bob curiously.

Justus smiles knowingly and rings the doorbell. A few moments later, the door opens. They are greeted by a cheerful, elderly lady on the third floor.

“Hello Mrs Sciutto!” says Justus politely.

“How can I help you kids?”

“We’re from the film group at Rocky Beach High School,” explains Peter. “It’s about your house.”

“Ah, I see – the film group. Sure, please come inside! I’ve just finished making a pot of iced tea. I’m sure you’re all thirsty in this heat.”

“Thank you, ma’am.” Justus shakes her hand and introduces himself and his two friends.

“So, tell me what you all have planned. I was quite the film fan in my earlier days. I even dreamt of becoming an actress when I was a young girl. But I guess that wasn’t meant to be.” She smiles. “And that’s why I’m all the more happy to offer any help I can to aspiring filmmakers.”

“Well, it’s really just a school project,” Bob admits. The Three Investigators move into the living room. It is well lit with a welcoming atmosphere. Justus notes that there are no personal photos to be seen in the room. Perhaps Mrs Sciutto doesn’t have any relatives.

“Please, sit down,” invites the elderly lady. “I just have to know what you plan to do with my house!”

In response, Justus, Peter and Bob explain their plans for the film project in detail.

“A horrorfilm!” says Mrs Sciutto as the boys finish explaining. “Well, this house is perfect for that.”

“You mean as a good backdrop for filming creepy scenes?” asks Justus. “Yes, that as well. It is an old house after all. You know, my husband’s ancestors built this house. One might say that the house is cursed.”

“That sounds perfect!” says Bob.

“But then, there are the puppets.” The old woman’s face darkens.
