I want to be something that no one else is

Mother picked up Josephina from preschool. Today she was very happy, because they will have a masquerade at preschool tomorrow and Josephina happily tells her mother that. She just hasn't figured out what to dress up as.

- You can dress up as a nurse, suggests mother.

Josephina shakes her head. Mom always suggests this when someone is going to a masquerade. She works as a nurse.

- What did you have in mind then, asks mother?

Josefina doesn't really know. Majken, Elias, Nora and Olle will dress up as princesses. William, Ylva, Magnus and Ida are supposed to be pirates. Jocke will be an astronaut and Ginny will dress up as a dinosaur. Josephina wants to be something that no one else is.

She runs out of the car when they get home. The family lives on a farm and has about 50 cows, 20 chickens, 10 sheep, 3 horses, 5 rabbits, 6 pigs, 4 cats and 2 dogs. And also all the mosquitoes, wasps and other animals found in the forests. Josephina's father is a farmer and owns the farm together with his father and his 5 siblings. Josefina meets her father who is on his way to the barn.

- Dad, what do you think I should dress up for tomorrow at the masquerade?

- You can be a farmer, he says. If you take the overalls that you usually wear when you're in the barn and the cap, you'll be a really nice farmer.

Josephina shakes her head again. What a bad idea. Probably because she likes all the animals, but she would probably get teased for her outfit. Everyone else would come in their nice suits, and then she comes in overalls that smell like cow shit.

She enters the house and almost collides with her big sister Jenny. Jenny is 13 years old and has just become a teenager. Mom says she doesn't really understand Jenny sometimes, when she has her teenage outbursts. Today, however, she seems to be in a good mood so Josephina dares to ask what she thinks.

- Hummm, you can always dress up as a ballerina. If you are really kind, you can borrow my old ballet skirt.

- Maybe, says Josephina. But I do not know. I think Moa should be a ballerina and I don't want to be something that someone else is.

-Ok, but don't think too long. Maybe I'll regret it so you can't borrow the skirt anymore, says Jenny.

Josephina thinks Jenny and everyone else for that matter who say they regret it are strange. If you have promised something, you must keep it. Jenny has been dancing ballet since she was 5 years old, exactly the same age as Josephina is now. Jenny thinks that Josephina should also start dancing, but Josephina would rather stick with horses as she sometimes does with her big cousin Ronja. She is 25 years old and has just opened her own riding school. She sometimes borrows the three horses the family has on their farm. Maybe Josephina should dress up as a rider? No, by the way, Emil has said he will.

Josephina goes up the stairs to her room. She passes her older brother Jesper's room and the door is ajar so Josephina peeks in. He sits and does his homework, or pretends to. Instead, he texts his new girlfriend on his phone. Josephina has seen them kiss a few times. Mother says that you can do that when you are as big as Jesper and Emma, they are 17 years old.
