My Thoughts

This is in dedicated to that shy boy who became a confident man. In growing pains.BookRix GmbH & Co. KG81371 Munich

The Intro

Welcome to my world. The day to day, minute to minute, hour to hour, thought life of a college student. This was me a decade ago. Running from one class to the next. Living a semi-adult life. Enjoy this crazy thing you're about to experience in my mind. From different parts of my life just mashed together.  From hood to academic scholar and every stop in between. The Roller Coaster has started. Let’s go.

Upward Bound Voices of The Future Race Relations

The race relations in China 2003 One Perspective a snippet “As a black woman in China back in 2003 among the masses of Chinese people. It is almost Impossible for me to hide or simply not stand out. I am once again the minority. As I walked down the streets of Shanghai & Beijing I was hoping to find a familiar dark color. Instead people pointed, staired, and laughed. Plus they also tried to reach out and touched me. I felt uncomfortable, irate, but it was honorable.

While eating at Pizza Hut with two of my friends, people were shocked to see us. So many were staring at us. So much so that they stopped, walked up to the window, and stared. They did not just gaze and walk on, they stopped and stared at all three of us like we were a miracle of mankind. It is not everyday that the average Chinese person sees a White man, let alone a tall blond with a black woman eating pizza. We felt like the grand attraction at an amusement park. Compared to what was waiting for me in Beijing but that's all you get for now.

A lesson Learned The Hard Way to get Information For Interviews

A Lesson Learned: The Hard Way to get Information For Interviews by myself, Mahlik Favors, and Brendalis Mercado. The Upward Bound newsletter class was assigned today to interview people that were in the Borough of Manhattan Community College as a class we had to introduce ourselves to them. We had to ask the students and faculty a series of questions to find out more about themselves. We asked basic questions and the responses we received were not enough to get to know and understand them. The student we interviewed is a freshman. He was a 17 year old Philipano male named Ral. Ral likes to play various kinds of video games and sports such as: Tennis, Volleyball, Football, and Hockey. He also listens to various types of music such as: Alternative rock and Hip-hop. Ral also loves to read, his favorite books are The Alchemist and To Kill a Mockingbird. He is also a big television watcher with Smallville and Jack and Bobby being his favorite show.

We also interviewed a Security Guard at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. 27 year old DU. DU started as a student and elevated himself to employee in status. He also listens to Alternative rock punk rock music. DU like Ral loves to read, DU also loves to read, his favorite book is a classic Charlotte's Web. He is also focused on finishing school. I say that to say this. Today we learned that to learn more about people the question you have to ask must be very specific. Getting to know someone is hard. They have to trust you in order for you to know them. When the person being interviewed is known they can trust you they open up to you more.

The Heart Doctor Words of Wisdom

Dear heart Doctor : I’m a student in the Upward bound Project and I'm disappointed with the results. As an under age teenager what can I do to make an impact? To make a difference? Dear concerned teen : Many people are disappointed with the results of the election. (not 2016 in this case but 2004) understand this, it is very important to see young people like yourself wanting to do something wanting to make a difference.

In your case to make a difference you can write letters to television shows explaining your concerns and issues. You can write letters to your local council and elected officials explaining your concerns and issues. Keep in mind that it will take time for you to receive responses from them. The worst thing you do is be silent. Going forward keep in mind this election, so when you turn the big 18 and you go to vote you keep the those who felt like you in mind. When you vote you remember the importance of what you are doing. Dear heart Doctor: if your best friend breaks up with you because her boyfriend likes you, do you have a right to go out with him?

Dear Confused Dater: That boy will remain your friend’s Ex-lover. So what you have to focus on is whether or not you like him. Your friends should come first but you are free to make your own choices. So ask yourself who comes first, your friend or her ex-lover?  Dear heart Doctor: I live in the Bronx. All my friends live here in New york City. I am familiar with all the things my friends like. How do I find out what other students are interested in throughout the country?

Bronx native this is what you do man.: It's great that you want to know about other people's interests. You can build a website for teens that focus on teenager activities and create a contact list so that people can converse with you. Have you tried a bulletin board with information about various events in the community? Student : I'm an Upward Bound student who can always use some good advice.

What made you choose to be a columnist? Dear heart Doctor: I choose to be a columnist because I love giving out advice and it's a good learning experience for me. I feel it's important for people to have someone they can receive help from.

Fitting In YaY or NaY? The Comparison of Two Great Reads

Get In wherever you fit in

A cell phone explains one of the various components of technology. An object that’s size can range from small to large. A useful mobile phone fits one’s personality. It has a speaker, microphone, calendar, antenna, keyboard, battery, and electronic clock built into it.  The responsibilities I have would be impossible to handle without it. The Job of being a full-time student along with the job of holding on to a job is thankless jobs within themselves. It’s very convenient because I can grab it and go. My cell phone is silver and brown with a very smooth touch. The screen is colorful and very clear. It says “Boost Mobile” on the back. When I open the cell phone I see a bunch of buttons and when I press a button it appears across the screen. Each button controls a different set of controls. The green button is the call button and the red button is the call end button.

A cell phone is a time managing machine. It allows me to keep a clear schedule to make sure that I remain on target. It allows me to put my class and work schedule in the electronic calendar along with timers. It lets me know when it is time to get up and start moving. My cell is sleek, sexy, small and smooth to the touch. It is an object that plays an important role in my future success because it is the object of time management.

In my life my cell phone is a life saver. It keeps me on a timely schedule, it indicates where I have free time, it shows me how to manage my free time, and it along with school and work does not allow for time to be wasted. Therefore my cell phone is my mythological object.

Fitting In

In Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao: and Carolyn Ferrell’s “Don’t Erase Me Stories” the central characters did not fulfill their families ‘expectations and are viewed by their families as outcasts. In both The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and “Don’t Erase Me Stories” the main characters who face a lot of developmental issues which had an impact on their education. In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao Oscar was always the one that got picked on in school, from elementary straight up and through High School. Oscar was an extremely introverted person who was very much interested in science fiction and never really had much of an outside life. He cared about his family and friends, they also cared about him as well in return but they were also embarrassed and ashamed by him as well because he could not get a girl.

In “Don’t Erase Me Stories” Lorrie had a very similar situation but his family was embarrassed and ashamed of him because of his lifestyle. Lorrie was a gay high school he was always singled out by his fellow students because he was gay. Both Oscar and Lorrie were singled out by the people closest to them because they did not fit in with the norms of both their environments.

In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao Oscar as I stated earlier Oscar was an outcast because he could not get a girl. His friends and family tried to in their point of view help him but Oscar thought that they were always trying to change him. One of the reasons why he thought they were trying to change him is because they kept using the theme of what a “real Dominican man” was. Oscar’s friends and family thought that real Dominican men were supposed to be the men that got all of the women they wanted. Not only was he not accepted by his family, He also had a hard time with getting people to believe that he was of Dominican descent. Even his friends and family at one point started doubting the fact of him being Dominican. One of the things that made it worse was that his friends were nerds just like Oscar but even they got girls at some point. The reason why they started doubting the fact that he was Dominican was because they completely failed to realize that he was not intending to be what they would call a “real Dominican man”. In elementary school he had two girlfriends but he got caught with one of them by the other one and both relationships ended. Here an argument can be made that he was being a little “real Dominican man” without knowing that he was being a “real Dominican man” because when he had two girlfriends none of friends or anybody in his family was teaching him about the idea of “real Dominican men”. “Anywhere else triple–zero batting average with the ladies might have passed without comment, but this is a Dominican kid we’re talking about, in a Dominican family ; dude was supposed to have Atomic Level G, was supposed to be pulling in the bitches with both hands. Everybody noticed his lack of game and because they were Dominican everybody talked about it.” Diaz, Junot. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. (24) His friends and family were saying that because he was Dominican he should be getting any and every girl because that was how the men in his family and of his culture operated.

In “Don’t Erase Me Stories” Lorrie was a high school student who faced a lot of hatred and torment on a daily basis at school. Just like Oscar did. The difference is that Lorrie was rejected from his family because of the life-style he led. Lorrie was as I stated earlier a gay male high school student. His mother did not know that he was gay, and when she found out he was gay she completely denied it. Both Lorrie and Oscar were outcasts in their own families’ one for the fact that he did not get girls, and the other for the fact that he was gay.

As I stated earlier Oscar was an extremely introverted person who was interested in a lot of science fiction but when he hit college he was still interested in a lot of science fiction but at the same time he began to become more extroverted. In other words he began to come out of his shell. “So guess who decided that she was the love of his life? Who fell head over heels for her because she heard her playing Joy Division up in her room and surprise, he loved Joy Division too? Oscar, of course. At first, dude just stared at her from afar and moaned about her “ineffable perfection.”” Diaz, Junot. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. (183). This is a very good example of how Oscar began to evolve, and come out of his shell. Before he reached college, like I stated earlier no girl would give Oscar the time of day, now he is conversing with this girl and he is doing it with a lot of confidence, whereas when he was younger he had no confidence in himself and could not get any girl’s attention at all. He went from being very introverted to being very extroverted and in doing so he actually stopped a womanizer from taking advantage of another woman.

Lorrie, on the other hand was basically forced into being and an introverted person by the fact that he was a gay male high school student. He was unable to pass a test given by the city of New York. He tells a story about the torment he has to endure on a daily basis, and his mother completely denying the fact that he was gay after she found out. She says, “If that boy tries to put his thing on you cut it off” - Ferrell, Carolyn. Don't Erase Me Stories. (4). Her she is literally saying Lorrie should literally cut a man’s penis off. When she said boy it was in reference to another character named Rakeem who was Lorrie’s lover. Here Lorrie was struggling with how to fit in with his family because he loved his family but his family did not support his life-style choice. It is like Lorrie is being discriminated against by the people who are supposed to be the ones who should love him the most. The only time Lorrie feels that he can be himself is when he is in front of Rocky’s Pizza. “I will be me for a few minutes behind Rocky’s pizza and I don’t care if it’s just a few minutes. I pat my hair down in the mirror next to the kitchen door. I take Anita’s letter knife out of my jacket pocket and leave it on the table next to where he is standing telling his wife that she never knew what love was till she met him and why does she have to be like that, talking about leaving him and shit? You keep going that way you won’t ever know how to keep a man.” - Ferrell, Carolyn. Don't Erase Me Stories. (19-20)

Both Lorrie and Oscar are outcasts because of the different choices that they made when they choose not to follow in the footsteps of the older people in their families. In “Don’t Erase Me” another scene where Lorrie struggled with the issue of fitting in when sitting on the bus being tormented by another character in the story named Tammy Fergusion said “You tight-ass homo, go suck some faggot dick.” - Ferrell, Carolyn. Don't Erase Me Stories. (6). To me no one should ever have to be victimized because of their life-style choice. Actually, the tormenting got to a point where Lorrie actually began to draw attention to the torment, by saying “All eyes are on us, but mainly on me. Tammy Ferguson is busy slapping around the babies to keep quiet and keep still, but I can still fill Laura’s eyes like they are silent machine guns. Faggot Faggot suck faggot dick faggot now repeat this one hundred times in one minute and that’s how I am feeling.” - Ferrell, Carolyn. Don't Erase Me Stories. (7). At this point Lorrie was so isolated from everyone that nothing mattered anymore. It is like in high school where you have the jocks, pretty people, the popular people, the nerds, and finally the lone-wolves (those who do not fit into any of the other groups.) The lone wolves and the nerds are usually the one who picked on all the time. I know because in High School I was part of the lone-wolves group. This paints the picture of a person who has been tortured to the point where they are on the verge of having a mental breakdown.

Another point where Lorrie was having trouble fitting in is dealing with his nick-name in his own Bronx neighborhood. “Ma named me for someone else. My real name is Lawrence Lincoln Jefferson Adams.” - Ferrell, Carolyn. Don't Erase Me Stories. (11). In other words “Lorrie” is really Lawrence’s nick-name. This all came about during a conversation another character named Cee-Cee, where Cee-Cee said to Lorrie “If anyone ever wants to kick my ass, she’ll just stand around and watch because a male with my name and who likes it just deserves to be watched when whipped.”- Ferrell, Carolyn. Don't Erase Me Stories. (11). This proves two things: first-off, it proves that his family is very homophobic, and secondly, it proves that Lorrie is not accepted for who he is by either his High School piers, or his family members. To attack someone is already just flat-out wrong (except for in the case of self-defense), but attacking someone because of a name or in Lorrie’s case because a boy has a girl’s name (in this case a nick-name) is completely wrong and flat-out ridiculous.

“Don’t Erase Me Stories” and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao confirm each other as it relates to the treatment of people who do not fit in and how they are looked at as outcast. Oscar and Lorrie are ousted because they do not follow in the steps of their Families. Throughout this essay I have shown you how not fitting in and not being accepted can affect a person. But sometimes not fitting in and being accepted is actually a good thing. On a positive note it means that you are a stand-out. In other words sometimes people do not fit in or are not accepted because they are actually better than those who they accept from. However in the cases of both Oscar and Lorrie this was not the case at all. Lorrie was ousted by his mother pretending to care about him and his cousin Ce-Ce just not caring about what happens to him because according to her a man with a nick-name “Lorrie” deserves whatever he gets coming to him in the form of a physical assault. Lorrie never felt comfortable around his family, and this was the same situation with Oscar. Oscar could not get any girls and his family thought because of that he would never be a “real Dominican man.” to be ousted by your own family because of either the fact that you do not match up to their standards or your lifestyle goes against the beliefs of a family is just wrong. Lorrie was forced into hiding who he really was and Oscar was struggling to define who he was. Both Lorrie and Oscar were struggling with how to identify themselves in society based on the rejections of their families.

Let's Call Politics Actual Politics

This essay is about the article entitled “Let’s Call a Lie a Lie ... Finally”, written by Patrick Healy from the “Week in Review” section of the New York Times. This article is about the term “Lying in Congress” I agree with John Kerry when he essentially said that president Bush was being untruthful about his strategy in the war on terror, a war that should have never happened. Over the years president Bush has shown me that he is unfit to be a man. In fact, he is the main reason why we are in financial ruins. If we could have seen this coming back in 2004, I guarantee Bush would have never seen the white house. That reminds me of the saying that those who do not learn from history will repeat it again.

This is exactly what is going on right now. In this race for presidency, we heard that race would not play a factor but that card has already been played in this race for presidency as it has in past races for presidency. This article has also been about how the candidates are afraid to use the word “liar” because the word within itself can be damaging to candidates credibility. Therefore, instead of using the word liar they disguise the word liar by using a word like influence.

This is about the article entitled “Whose Conversation Is It?” written by Jacob Heilbrunn from the “Week In Review” section of the New York Times.

This Article is about the sour economy. Right now, everybody is worrying about the economy, the financial slump that the people in the White House refuse to recognize as the recession. They are worried about what their financial future is shaping up to be. The sour economy is not the only thing that people are worried about; so far, we have seen people lose their houses, their homes, and even more importantly their jobs. For some families literally have no financial support.

One of the reasons why we are in the financial situation that we are in right now is because of a certain decision that we made back in 2003. That decision was to go to war because if we look at how much money we spent on this war in Iraq from 2003 up until this point I guarantee you that total far surpasses the proposed 700 billion dollar bailout plan. When we attacked on September 11 2001, we reacted based mostly and strongly on emotion instead of thinking rationally. At the end, this article asks a good question and that question is “Have we learned anything from our past mistakes or what we are going through right now?” The answer to this question right is obviously no because we are in a senseless war where as we are in a lose-lose situation. The reason why we are in a lose-lose situation if we win the war or not we are going to end up paying even more because of the economy right now all in the midst of bringing in a new president, who will then have to deal with this situation, which seems to get worse as everyday passes as we get closer to Election Day.

English 120 Homework

This is about the article titled “The Heartbeat Job” written by: John M. Broder from the “Week in Review” section of the New York Times. This article starts out briefly describing what the current Vice President of the United States of America Dick Chaney has done in the white House over the past eight years. The article also includes how Joseph R. Biden and Sarah Palin tried to use this to sway undecided voters to vote for Barack Obama and John McCain at the Vice-Presidential debate last Tuesday night. Biden asked voters “Do you want to see another four years of what were in right now, Or do you really want changes in the White House?” Palin asked voters “Do you want to shy away from what we already know? Or do you want us to stick with what has been effective for the past eight years?”

Neither Sarah Palin nor Joseph R. Biden responded to the essential question the opposite side posed to the voters, Palin and Biden clearly outlined their goals and how they would execute their goals should they become the Vice President of the United States of America. This article also discusses former Vice Presidents and what they were responsible for while they were in office prior to Dick Chaney.

“The Heart Job” used past Vice Presidents and responsibilities they had to describe what either Palin or Biden responsibilities will be when either John McCain or Barack Obama become president of the United States of America, and Sarah Palin or Joseph R. Biden become Vice President of the United States. The race for presidency is very close but we will know everything on November 4 2008.

Unity Deferred Can You Cross Out ‘Hillary’ and write ‘Sarah’?”

This piece is about the article entitled “Unity Deferred Can You Cross Out ‘Hillary’ and write ‘Sarah’?” written by Kate Zernike from the “Week in Review” section of the New York Times. The race for the white house has been a history-making race. It was the first race where we could have African-American or our first female president of the United States.
