In 2019, the author was initially unaware of Meghan and Harry's issues behind palace walls, but after being flooded with information, she realized something interesting was developing. She had written about Diana, Princess of Wales, and had been raised to do charity work, which led her to understand the importance of monarchy as a head of state.
The author questioned whether the institution of monarchy might have outlived its usefulness in the modern world. She believed that a constitutional monarch provides an essential public service, as it prevents politicians from gaining power and represents all citizens, even those who are anti-monarchist. However, when royalty forgets their duty and decides to exploit the system for personal gain, trouble will inevitably follow.
The author believed that she was fulfilling two valid purposes by enlightening the public about the situation and issuing a shot across the bow to Meghan and Harry. However, the couple's conduct has led her to conclude that they are dealing with a deeply disturbing couple whose selfindulgence is matched only by their self-centeredness and self-regard.
The author is Jamaican born and bred, and has a ringside seat at how race relations have evolved since the 1950s. She has friends and relations of all hues, and is mindful of the wonderful racial harmony that Jamaica has experienced. As a Jamaican, she has heartfelt regard for the national motto: "Out of Many, One People."
The author, a royal duchess of colour, was invested in Meghan's success and hoped that her book would help her realize the opportunity to do genuine good. However, Meghan's actions caused horror among the royals, friends, and relations, as well as Caribbean and African diplomats. The book had to be rewritten to accommodate the changes, and the author hoped that Meghan and Harry would live up to their glorious opportunity to do genuine good.
In the four years since Harry's 2022 Netflix documentary, the world has seen an astonishing display of racial inclusivity. Meghan and Harry have played the race card to the detriment of positive race relations, violating the privacy of their closest relatives. They have become figures of ridicule, even in Hollywood, and have been criticized by comedian Jo Koy at the 2024 Golden Globes.
Meghan and Harry have emerged as a living morality tale, part Sophoclean tragedy, part Shakespearean drama, and part Feydeau farce. They failed to live up to their original promise of being ideal representatives of racial inclusivity and demonstrating how love and royal virtues can conquer prejudice. Instead, they have become two of the biggest losers of 2023, showcasing the consequences of lack of appreciation and human failings.
On May 19th, 2018, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Windsor, arrived at St. George's Chapel in Windsor, where she was due to marry Harry. She was a vision of loveliness, projected as a Hollywood-style idea of beauty. Her white silk wedding dress, designed by Clare Waight Keller, conveyed demure modesty, stylish elegance, and joyousness. The extravagant veil, heavily embroidered with her favorite flowers, wintersweet and California poppy, and native Commonwealth flowers, represented a Hollywood-style idea of beauty. Meghan's dress conveyed her love for clothes, her feminism, and her willingness to use traditions as needed. However, there was controversy surrounding her choice of virginal white, defying royal and aristocratic customs. Queen Elizabeth II was surprised by Meghan's choice, but she was starting out as she intended to continue, with her father-in-law-tobe nicknamed her 'Tungsten'.
Meghan Markle's wedding was a surprise, as she did not make any curtsy to the Queen and the groom bows. This omission caused consternation among the assembled company at St. George's Chapel, as everyone noticed her. Meghan's nervousness and forgetfulness were blamed for her omission, which was expected by all. The run-up to the wedding had been fraught with scenes, tantrums, and demands, most of which were carefully concealed from the public.
One example was the fuss Harry and Meghan made over the emerald and diamond kokoshnik tiara Princess Eugenie had chosen for her wedding. The date of her marriage had to be pushed back to allow Harry, who took precedence over her, to be married first. The tiara she had chosen once belonged to Grand Duchess Xenia of Russia, Tsar Nicholas II's elder sister. The Queen had promised Eugenie the use of that tiara, but Meghan decided to wear Grand Duchess Xenia's kokoshnik at her wedding.
Meghan had a choice of jewels, but no incoming bride can just scoop up whatever jewels she wants and wear them as if by right. She has no right to anything and must accept a loan, which means that the lower down the order of precedence she is, the more limited her choice. Meghan's intelligence and experience in front of the camera have honed her skill in choosing what suits her best to portray the image she wants to project.
Meghan Markle's wedding to Harry Markle was met with criticism for her promissory nature, as Queen Elizabeth II had promised the Xenia Tiara to Eugenie. Meghan was forced to settle for Queen Mary's Bandeau, which earned her and Harry's ire. Meghan also made a fuss about the scent of St. George's Chapel and the ingredients of certain dishes being prepared for the wedding. Harry asserted, "What Meghan wants, Meghan gets," as her requirements escalated. Staff at the palace objected to some of Meghan's demands, such as insisting that St. George's Chapel smelt musty and demanding perfumed scents.
Despite initial reservations about the suitability of the union due to their celerity and Meghan's history, everyone wanted the marriage to be a success. Meghan's virtues were focused upon, including her intelligence, determination, charm, vivacity, sense of humor, and heritage. Her American and well-educated background and her bi-racial identity made the monarchy more representative of multiracial, multicultural Britain. The late Queen's wit and wit conveyed a welcome degree of truth and humor, as Meghan's bi-racial identity made the monarchy more reflective and representative of multicultural Britain.
Meghan Markle's mixed-race heritage was embraced by the British press and public, who believed it was time for the British Royal Family to catch up with its Continental cousins. The Queen of Denmark's second son had married an Eurasian woman, while Prince Rainier of Monaco's nephew had married a West Indian of colour. The Queen had given her blessing when two of her first cousins-once-removed, the Hon. James Lascelles and Lady Davina Windsor, had married people of color.
Meghan's wedding went off without a hitch, with 29 million Americans and 18 million Britons watching the wedding. The couple ratified their style credentials by wearing a classical white silk-crepe halter neckline evening dress by Stella McCartney at the black tie reception at Frogmore House. The couple seemed very much in love, with many commenting on their love and commitment to their work, which revolved around charitable and humanitarian activities.
However, four days after the wedding, Meghan joined Harry and Prince Charles and Camilla at a garden party at Buckingham Palace, which led some to believe that Meghan was unsuited to the role of royal duchess. If this was true, there was little doubt that she was no more suited to royal life than a fish is to stratospheric flying. Since then, Meghan and Harry have lurched from one controversy to another, with criticism for every foot they have put right and four feet wrong.
