The Human Side of Grace

TRUTH IS SO many sided that unless we see it in its compass we get one-sided, and we do not get the fulness of the blessing God has for us. We wish to speak of human cooperation. When we talk of the human side we immediately begin to think about works, but it is far removed from works as grace is. The human side never furnishes any power, it only furnishes a channel for the display of God’s power. I want you to see that. If you want to send a telegram you must have the wires strung along on poles; but those wires furnish nothing — they are just a channel for the electricity to work upon. Copper wire is nothing more than wood as to power alone.

That is all that human cooperation means. It means that we rise up to meet that which God has for us. There is no merit in it, all the merit is in Jesus. If you wanted to go to California the railroads of this country furnish an opportunity to take you to California; your part is to get the time-tables and study them; you see what time the trains leave here, what connections you make at Chicago, and you make your arrangements according to that time-table; then you find out what it costs to buy your ticket. That is your side, and when you have done that you go and sit down in the train, and all the power is furnished by the railroad company. It would not do any good to have railroads netting this country if nobody traveled on them.

It is the very same in spiritual things. We are apt to think that spiritual things are slipshod, that somehow we will have to get blessed and we will have to get to Heaven; but there are conditions which govern spiritual laws as much as conditions which govern the laws of gravitation. If we are going to get blessing we have simply to meet our side of the conditions. There is something we must do which God never can or never will do, and while God furnishes all the power, yet there is a cooperation on the human side which makes all that available to us.
