Baker (1849-1915) and her three sisters. The Christ-Life

(as found in the Book of Romans.)

Conditions, true in Paul’s day and more pronounced in our day.

THE EPISTLE TO the Romans is the systematic theology of the Bible logically arranged. In the Gospels there is very little stated about the vicarious offering of Christ. We get the history of Christ, His daily work and His death, but the Gospels do not bring out what His work meant, and it was left to Paul with his brilliant mind and education, under the direction of the Spirit, to draw up a systematic study of redemption that men might know how to be saved. You find this in the Book of Romans as nowhere else. The Epistle of Paul to the Romans, the Ephesians, and the Galatians are doctrinal, and bring out more or less clearly the Plan of Salvation.

In Romans we get first, the existence of God, and next the fall of man and ruin of the race. God brings against them the allegation of unthankfulness.

“For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse. Because that when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful.”

The whole world at large is without excuse in the face of nature, that they do not glorify God through His creation. They see the creation of God and the marvelous things wrought by Him in the earth, and He says in all these we are to understand spiritual things, “even His eternal power and Godhead.” Even the heathen must know that there is a God who created these things, and they “Glorify Him not as God.” Ingratitude is an abominable sin. They do not glorify Him and are not grateful. We forget to thank God for our common blessings — sight and hearing and all these things — we forget, that is what the world is doing, they glorify not God neither are thankful for the daily things in which God is made manifest.
