Abundance of Grace

EAT, O FRIENDS, drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.” We often begin by telling people what they are not and what they ought to be, and getting their eyes turned in upon themselves to straighten out things, but the Lord has other ways than that, and I have a feeling that we have turned our eyes upon ourselves so long that we have not come as far as God wants.

The Lord desires our eyes turned upon Him, and then He wants us to see — as I am afraid we do not see — the great freedom and liberality with which He bestows His blessings; how abundantly free they are; how they are for any little child, and that they are within the reach of all.

So He is saying today, “Eat, O, friends, drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved,” and I have a feeling, too, that a lot of the preparation which we think is necessary, we attempt in a wrong way. We go to investigating ourselves with a kind of morbid introspection, but we haven’t eyes to see, and even if we found things, we would not know what to do with them.

As sinners we see grace so abundant and free, but act as if grace passed away after we are saved and our work should begin. You tell a sinner to do nothing but come; Jesus says, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” We tell people to come just as they are with all their sins upon them, just to come to Jesus — that is the first step — and Jesus will do the rest. I remember in our mission, a young man who was bound by drink, and we were talking one night about salvation, and he sat there in his seat and said to himself, “I want to be a Christian, but I cannot stop drinking; I cannot give up tobacco though I should like to.” He said the Lord spoke to him, — “I do not ask you to give up those things, I ask you to come to Me, and I will take them away from you,” and so he gladly came, and Jesus saved him from them all.

That same principle goes on after we are saved. You are trying to make yourself like your Lord. I know I worked at that for a long time — trying to change myself over into the likeness of Jesus, of course, asking Him to help!
