The Just Shall Live By Faith

I WANT TO speak to you on the subject of Faith. God in working with humanity works on great principles which He never changes. Look at this law of faith. He says in one place, “With God all things are possible.” First of all, before we can have faith He brings to our notice what He is in Himself. There is nothing hard for God. He asked Jeremiah once, “Is there anything too hard for me?” We can start out on this proposition that nothing can ever come to our lives but that God is able.

Faith is not a commodity that you can get a certain amount of and store away. It is seeing the person you want to trust, and seeing whether they are worthy and able. Often men make promises, they are very glad to help you, but it does not effect you because you know they cannot do the things they promised. God has said there is nothing hard for Him; He can change circumstances, He can turn the heart of kings as the rivers are turned, He can change the hearts of men, and turn the lion into the lamb, He can transform us. He says He “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.” I really believe we sometimes look at God, and think it is pretty hard for Him to do that, it is a little too much for God, and we are all the time trying to make it easier for Him. None of this is faith.

Then the Lord said, “All things are possible to him that believeth.” Now that is the principle on which God is working. The one difficulty, I think, in trusting God, is that He is invisible. In the life we have lived we have been able to see things. If you wanted to buy a farm you could go and walk over its acres and talk with the man who wanted to sell it. Or if you wanted to buy a house, you could go and walk through the building and talk with the owner as to the price; it was all open and visible, and you walked in the life of sense. You say, If God could speak to me like this man speaks to me I could believe. Well, there is no faith on that line, it is like saying, I wish I was upstairs and downstairs at the same time. We must believe the Word of God when He says, “All things are possible to him that believeth.” What God really wanted in this world was a people fully united to Him through faith.
