Humility

WHEN THE STUDENTS’ Volunteer Convention was held in this city, I attended and saw that great audience of five or six thousand young people and workers from everywhere, cultivated and talented workers, and while my sympathies were entirely with them and with the object of that organization, yet I had such a painful sense that there was so little reliance upon the Holy Spirit, I saw that the young people going away knew no more about the Spirit nor how to trust Him than when they came, and it seemed such an opportunity, and I said, “Lord, will You show me the condition that will bring about and make possible the greatest power of God in a life,” and the Lord gave me two words. He said, The greatest Humility. Then when I came home I said to Him, will you show me what humility is as You see it, and He turned me, to my surprise, to the fifth chapter of 1 Peter. It says:

“Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
