This article, "Conformed to His Image," originally appeared in the January-February 1932 issue of Trust, a magazine produced by Elim Publishing House in Rochester, New York, founded by Mrs. Elizabeth V. Baker (1849-1915) and her three sisters. This article by Mrs. Baker, published posthumously, talks about the spiritual growth, the life of faith that follows after salvation: “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

Conformed to His Image

“For whom he did foreknow, he also did, predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.”

Romans 8:29

GOD MADE MAN in the beginning in the image of God, and Jesus Christ was also made in the image of God; He was “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person.” The first Adam was made in the image of God, and the second Adam was made in the image of God; the first man turned away and lost the image of God, and what God is after is to recreate the race and get it back into the likeness of God. I believe the new man is created in righteousness and true holiness; and I feel among other things that Christ came for, one was that we might see what the image of God was.

In the Old Testament we find something of the character of God in the law and in the sacrifices. The whole Old Testament is full of representations of the holiness and character of God, but even then men did not seem to grasp it, and now God condescended to give us a walking image of Himself, as if He did not come down any longer on the printed page like a photograph, but the real person of God walking among men — My Son — and now He says: There is your pattern, and there is the image I want you to bear.
