I am exceedingly delighted to write a Preface to the second edition of this important and compelling book, The Role Of Culture And Communication In Mediation 2nd Edition by Edward Dzerinyuy Bello. Culture has been defined as the aggregate or sum total of the values, mores, worldviews, and philosophy of life of a people. This means that culture is critical to the construction of the identity of a people as it crystallises their hopes and aspirations, affirms their distinctiveness as a group and offers them a foothold in life. Culture, therefore, constitutes the bedrock or foundation on which a people or group builds and finds meaning to their essence and existence. Culture is also strategic to communication which is language in action. We are rational beings because we communicate intelligently and coherently. Language is the veritable vehicle through which culture is communicated and transmitted from generation to generation. This is what separates humanity from other lesser creatures and demarcates the boundary between nature and culture. Both culture and communication play a key and decisive role in mediation which is the art of exercising prudent judgement with the aim of resolving conflicts and enhancing mutual understanding. This book covers these key themes of culture, communication, and mediation in a salutary and commendable manner. Through the book, the author Edward Dzerinyuy Bello invites readers to contemplate the power of culture in communication and mediation as a strategy for enriching the discourse and providing actionable solutions to disputes and conflicts which may arise due to differences in perception, knowledge, and cognition. This is a book that is a valuable addition to the corpus of literature on the subject. It titillates our interest and understanding of the range issues and concerns inherent in the cultural imagination. The chapters have been well laid out and treated with candour, remarkable skill, and powerful insight. This is a book whose time has come. It keeps the company of canonical books on media, communication, and mediation. I recommend it to those with passion for the mediatory role culture and communication can play in the promotion of social harmony and peaceful coexistence in formal and informal settings as well as in public and private domains. Whether we negotiate or mediate in our daily lives, whether it's regarding our personal matters or corporate affairs, we all want to communicate effectively and be understood well. This is an important aspect of building a solid foundation in our lives. Good communication during mediation is akin to building trust in one another for a better way forward. As we mediate, we expect our private or corporate partners to understand each other's point of view, creating a trustworthy environment. It enables us to express "the rights and obligations" that we aim to achieve together based on our feelings and desires. We then establish this as a guiding principle to define our relationship during the mediation process.
We are taking another step forward in this digital era, especially with the emergence of a new phenomenon that cannot be ignored - Artificial Intelligence (AI). Although we may not fully understand the mechanics behind the programs developed in the digital world and AI, we use their programs for effective negotiation to guide the relationship we have established based on 'our rights and obligations.' While we may not comprehend the development of the digital era and AI, we trust the services they provide us. This is a significant evolutionary step, as humans have always had a natural protective mechanism. Companies in the digital AI era have accepted that both parties trust the communicative method of the digital world, which is part of the trustful feelings and desires they share. Though both parties may have differing goals, they trust the digital AI communication method, which brings us to human behavior psychology, such as Schulz Von Thun, Marston Method, Edward T Hall, and can be aligned with the good five or six stages of working with the NVC (nonviolent communication) method of Rosenberg, which I have written about in this book.
This second edition of my book, 'The Role of Culture and Communication in Mediation,' continues the work of the first edition. What is new in this second edition is working with the Marston method, Lüscher’s method, and ABC psychological method during communication, as well as working with the Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PRM) method before or during mediation.
Furthermore, from my personal experience during my 6-week intensive medical Reha therapy at ZAR Berlin (https://www.zar.de/berlin), I deeply acknowledge that culture and communication still play a significant role in our daily lives, especially in mediation. Acknowledging this importance, the use of ABC psychological explanations and PRM preparation will strengthen how we mediate in our daily lives. Moreover, most of the personal examples I have added in this second edition are from corporate mediation that I have recently experienced. These projects justify everything I wrote about in the first edition. The fact that I could bring the German and African principles to execute the work we started in 2015 shows the importance of this book, 'The Role of Culture and Communication in Mediation.' The fact that I could prove and justify facts to the judge in the district court of Potsdam and the medical psychological doctors in Potsdam and Berlin demonstrates the uniqueness of this book when it comes to culture, communication, and mediation.

In relation to various cultural theories, The Role of Culture and Communication in Mediation by Edward Dzerinyuy Bello, outlines the crucial role of culture and how its impact is evident within communication during mediation. It offers a practical approach of having mediators remain conscious of their thoughts and actions while attentively facilitating an unbiased communication between the parties involved.
Most importantly, however, are the theoretical views and models borrowed from various writers such as Edward T Hall, Eric Berne, Schulz Von Thun as authenticated in the lives of the author and others highlighted in the book.
Whether a student, traveller in an unknown country, researcher, practitioner, parent or just any person, everyone will mediate at different levels through life’s journey. This book contains practical suggestions and points to think about that will enable embracing similarities in differences and contribute to individuals valuing humanity.

When I published my book, "YOU ARE THE GREATEST - in conversation with yourself," I acknowledged the personal progress I had made in developing a new writing method. I am happy with my style of writing, which reflects my own voice. Now, with the second edition of "The Role of Culture and Communication in Mediation" (nonviolent communication), I have taken a big step forward. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the "Institut für Managementberatung GmbH Potsdam-Berlin," where I have learned so much. I am grateful to the German government, the city of Potsdam, and the district court of Potsdam. I also acknowledge my daughter, Rosalie Fomo-Nyuy Bello, who has shaped my life.
I take full responsibility for any typos or grammatical mistakes found in this book. I acted in good faith, and my greatest desire is to share knowledge of the importance of culture and communication in mediation and how it affects our daily lives.
With humility,
