NAYTNAL – THE AWAKENING is the first volume of the seven-part fantasy series NAYTNAL, which has already been published as novels. The screenplay has not yet been made into a film and is aimed not only at curious readers who enjoy reading film scripts, but also at film companies and filmmakers who might want to make a film of this series.
The seven-part fantasy series NAYTNAL is a fantastic story that revolves around the two main protagonists Kitty and Jojo. Together they have to endure numerous adventures in the legendary parallel world of Naytnal, overcome difficult tests and repeatedly fight against evil with their mysterious magic. The love story between Kitty and her friend Dennis, an inhabitant of the legendary world of Naytnal, runs like a thread through all seven volumes.
The protagonists are 16 and 17 years old at the beginning of the series, and by the end of the series they have reached adulthood. Due to the love story aspect, it could be classified as fantasy literature or as a young adult.
The message of this series is intended to be an appeal to self-confidence. People who sometimes feel that they are not strong enough for the tasks in life could find a way to be braver and to recognize their own worth more through the experiences of Kitty, Jojo and their friends. Basically, the novel series is simply intended to enchant, bring joy and offer the viewer exciting moments.
INT – ROCK GORGE, AT NIGHT
KITTY (16), a young girl with shoulder-length blonde hair, presses her trembling body tightly against the rock face. Her breathing is rapid, her eyes are filled with tears. Her lips are trembling as if it were minus 10 degrees.
KITTY (whispering, desperate): Leave me alone...
The screams she hears are loud and clear. She desperately hopes they won't find her here. She puts a hand in front of her face. If she couldn't see her, they might not be able to see her. But it doesn't seem to be working. The dark roar echoes through the night.
KITTY presses herself even harder against the wall as the screams become louder and clearer. Suddenly the wall gives way. An opening appears out of nowhere and KITTY is swallowed by the rocks. The screams stop.
INT. DARK CAVE - NIGHT
It is darker than night. KITTY can no longer see anything. She can only hear her breathing. Her breathing slowly calms down again when she feels that she can feel safe.
KITTY (whispering): Where am I?
Suddenly there is a loud bang. It sounds as if someone is pushing a chair or a table back and forth. Glass breaks. Less than two seconds later a small light comes on, probably the light of a torch. KITTY turns around, startled.
She is in a small, damp and cold cave. The drops that fall from the ceiling of the room create stone patterns.
VOICE (OS): I knew it.
KITTY suddenly turns towards the voice. A young man (18) stands next to her with a torch in his hand and looks at her reverently.
YOUNG MAN: I knew you were coming.
KITTY: Where am I? Who are you?
YOUNG MAN: There will be time for that later, Kitty Linnore. The important thing is that you are here.
KITTY: But I don't even know where I am. What's going on here?
The young man doesn't answer. Instead, he takes KITTY by the hand and leads her to a table with two chairs.
YOUNG MAN: Sit down.
KITTY does what he says without taking her eyes off him.
YOUNG MAN: You ran away from them.
KITTY: From whom?
YOUNG MAN: Never let them find you. Only when you are ready can you fight them.
KITTY: But I don't want to fight. Who should I fight against? Who are those who are persecuting me and why are they persecuting me?
The young man shakes his head.
YOUNG MAN: All things in their own time, Kitty Linnore.
Suddenly it becomes pitch black again. KITTY only hears her own quiet breathing echoing through the room.
KITTY (quietly): The demons are looking for me...
Suddenly she feels as if she is being carried up into the air and floating. Rays of light penetrate her eyes. She begins to see images.
EXT. DESERT - DAY
KITTY is floating over a long, lonely road. She can't move, can't scream, can't do anything. A dry bush is being swept across the road by the wind. A MAN (35) is watching him. He sips from his water bottle and puts it in his brown backpack. Storm clouds are gathering on the horizon.
The MAN sits down on a bench by the side of the road, takes out a map and a felt-tip pen. He marks the route he has taken today.
Suddenly a storm comes up. Lightning flashes, thunder rumbles. The MAN sits rooted to the spot and stares into the sky. The clouds circulate, a tornado forms. Something large with wings and a green shimmer flies out of the whirlwind.
THUNDERBIRD (deep, echoing voice): Make your wish!
MAN (mechanically): Who are you? What are you?
THUNDERBIRD: I, Thunderbird, have come from the depths of space to offer you world domination. Trade your soul with me and you will receive limitless power. Make your wish!
MAN (slowly): I wish to exchange my soul with yours.
THUNDERBIRD (roaring): So be it!
Thunderbird devours the MAN, and shortly thereafter the clouds and the storm disappear.
A mysterious calm descends on the edge of the endless highway.
INT. OUTSIDE – IN THE BOARDING SCHOOL – THE COURTYARD
Snow is falling quietly on the courtyard. Fog is spreading across the valley and seems to swallow up the mountains. It is already dark, although it is only 5 p.m. The courtyard is completely white, icicles hang from the gutters of the huge gray concrete block. Some people are hesitantly lugging wooden boxes around, others are playing basketball or shoveling snow. Mysterious women in black and white clothes are walking around and occasionally shouting incomprehensible sentences. There is a light behind almost every window of the huge building complex.
INT. INTERIOR – BOARDING SCHOOL HALLWAY – DUSK
There is a lot of hustle and bustle in the hallway. Children are shouting, screaming and laughing until they are reprimanded by teachers. A GIRL in a red dress, about 17 years old, runs over a smaller boy.
GIRL (angrily): What are you doing here?
She runs into a room and slams the door.
INT. INNIN – ROOM – DUSK
The room is darkened. Another girl, KITTY (16), sits at the window and pushes a mobile made of glass fragments that casts soft light effects on the wall. She hums a melody quietly.
GIRL (calling): Kitty? Kitty!
She turns on the light.
GIRL: Kitty, are you sleeping?
KITTY seems lost in thought and does not react.
GIRL (joking): Hello! Earth to Kitty. Activate brain sensors.
KITTY (shocked, turns around): Oh... hey, Jojo.
JOJO (17) takes the brush from Kitty’s bedside table and combs her wavy brown hair.
JOJO: Can I?
KITTY: Is your brush gone again?
JOJO: Without a trace. You know how it is.
KITTY (as she goes to the closet): Why do you always lose your things?
KITTY opens the closet, looks for a pair of trousers that fit, but doesn't find any and closes it again.
JOJO (laughs): Hey, do you want to eat in your bathrobe? We're allowed to sit with the boys today...
KITTY (skeptically): You and the boys always. I'm getting bored of that stupid food anyway.
JOJO sprays perfume on his neck and puts a necklace around his neck.
KITTY (shaking her head): Tell me, don't you think you're exaggerating a bit?
JOJO (with a smile): Do I look good? Come on, hurry up. We have to leave soon.
KITTY laughs briefly, takes off her bathrobe and puts on jeans and a sweater with a dragon on it.
JOJO (grumpily): What’s that supposed to mean?
KITTY (confidently): I wear what I want. And I like dragons.
JOJO (singing): Baby, baby, baby...
KITTY lightly taps JOJO on the head.
JOJO (seriously): Man, Kitty. You're 16. Act like it.
INT. INTERIOR – DINING ROOM – EVENING
The dining hall is full. Students are handing out the food, teachers are standing around the room like security guards. There is a mixed dinner - a new development that makes Jojo happy. She and Kitty enter the hall.
TEACHER (loudly): Don’t push!
TEACHER (loudly): Everyone go to their place quietly! And without making any noise!
JOJO and KITTY look around. Jojo spots a table with two boys and pulls Kitty with him.
JOJO (frantically): Come on, Kitty. Over there.
KITTY bumps into someone.
KITTY (quietly): Mr. Templeton...
Mr. Templeton, the head of the boarding school, stands in front of Kitty.
MR. TEMPLETON (warningly, loudly): Out of my sight!
KITTY takes a step back. Jojo pulls her further.
JOJO (quietly): The seats are still free.
They sit down at the table with the boys and start eating.
JOJO (whispering to Kitty): Isn’t he cute?
KITTY (whispers back): Maybe you should talk to him.
JOJO (annoyed): I already have.
KITTY (imitating Jojo): Hi.
The boys whisper. Jojo smiles at the dark-blond boy.
KITTY (finally): Tell me, what’s your name?
JEREMY (smiles): I'm Jeremy. And you?
KITTY (calmly): Kitty Linnore. This is my friend Jojo.
JEREMY (to Jojo): Hello, Jojo.
Jojo nods, blushes.
JESSE: I'm Jesse. What level are you in?
KITTY: Eleventh. And you?
JESSE: Me in eighth grade. Jeremy in twelfth grade.
JOJO (wow)
KITTY (ironically): Works absolutely great, doesn’t it?
JOJO (sour): Shut up.
JEREMY (remembers): Kitty Linnore... Where have I heard that name before? Your mom is a researcher, right?
JOJO (proudly): Your mom is an astronomer.
KITTY (quietly): Anthropologist.
JEREMY (excited): Leonie Linnore? The dinosaur hunter?
Kitty nods.
JEREMY (impressed): Man, crazy. I've read her books. Why are you here in Lantyan?
KITTY (grumpily): What for?
JEREMY (fascinated): I can't believe I'm sitting here with Leonie Linnore's daughter. Why aren't you traveling with your mom?
KITTY (screaming): She has a lot to do!
Kitty stands up abruptly, her fork falls into the food, she runs out.
JEREMY (confused): What's wrong with her?
JOJO (reassuringly): Nothing. Don't take it personally.
Jojo looks after Kitty thoughtfully.
INT. KITTY'S ROOM – NIGHT
Kitty enters her dimly lit room, immediately throws herself on the bed and buries her face in her pillow. She begins to sob quietly, her body barely moving. A few moments later, the door opens quietly.
JOJO: Hey, Kitty, is everything okay?
Jojo turns on the light and the room lights up. She sits down on the bed next to Kitty. A draft of air turns the mobile above the bed and small points of light dance on the walls. Jojo gently puts a hand on Kitty's shoulder.
Jojo pushes Kitty's hair aside so he can see her face. Kitty slowly turns around and shows her tear-filled eyes.
KITTY: I'm sorry I messed it up with the boys.
JOJO: It's not that bad. What was wrong with you?
KITTY: I don't know.
Kitty sits up and takes off her sweater, which she throws on the floor. She stands up, unbuttons her jeans and steps out. Her pale skin glows dully in the dim light of the room. She puts on a nightgown and gets back into bed.
JOJO: Was it because of your mom?
Kitty doesn't answer. Jojo puts on her nightgown and puts her clothes neatly in the closet. She also puts away Kitty's clothes, which are still lying on the floor.
Jojo is about to go to her own bed when Kitty turns to her.
KITTY: Can you sleep with me tonight?
JOJO: Sure.
Jojo lies down in bed next to Kitty and hugs her.
JOJO (comfortingly): You don’t have to be sad.
KITTY (almost crying): She doesn't want to know who I am.
JOJO: Why do you think that?
KITTY: She's never here. She never visits me. Why? Why?
JOJO: Maybe she just has too much to do...
KITTY: She doesn't want me.
JOJO: Yes, Kitty. She'll probably come and visit you soon.
KITTY: But I don't even know what she looks like anymore. All I have is an old photo.
Kitty reaches into her nightstand and gives Jojo a photo. It shows a man, a beautiful woman and a little girl in bathing suits on the beach. The man is wearing a T-shirt, the woman a colorful beach dress. The sea can be seen in the background.
KITTY (thoughtfully): That was just before I came here. Before my dad died.
Kitty wipes the tears from her eyes while Jojo looks at the photo.
KITTY (crying): I don't remember who brought me here, Jojo. Sometimes I think I've always been here.
JOJO: Your mom is very beautiful.
KITTY: Do you think she forgot me? Just forgot?
JOJO: Oh, Kitty. Your mom loves you. I'm sure of it. She'll come and get you one day. She hasn't forgotten you. Look, I don't even have parents...
KITTY: But you have an aunt who visits you often. And you always go to her during the holidays.
JOJO: Yes, but it's boring there. And she's just as strict as the people here.
Jojo puts the photo back in Kitty's nightstand and turns off the light. She puts her arm around Kitty again and snuggles up to her.
KITTY: I'm glad I have you.
JOJO: Go to sleep now. Everything will definitely look better tomorrow.
Jojo gently strokes Kitty's long hair. Kitty finds comfort in being close.
INT. DORMITORY – MORNING
The room is silent until suddenly a loud knock on the door breaks the silence. KITTY is awakened by this while she is lying in bed. The screaming of children and the admonishing voices of the teachers can be heard from the hallway.
KITTY stretches while JOJO continues to sleep soundly.
There is another loud knock on the door.
TEMPLETON (OS): Get up! If you are not out in ten minutes, you will be confined to your room for a week.
KITTY (mumbles): Oh no, not Templeton again...
KITTY nudges JOJO, who yawns and opens her eyes.
JOJO (tired): Did Templeton have wake-up duty again today?
KITTY: He likes to wake us up so roughly.
JOJO frantically rummages through her closet.
JOJO: Where are my shoes? I can't find my shoes, Kitty.
KITTY: Under the bed.
KITTY frantically pulls out her brush and starts combing her hair. The clock ticks mercilessly.
KITTY (runs into the bathroom): I'm going to wash myself quickly!
JOJO finds her shoes under the bed, puts them on and follows KITTY into the bathroom.
