EPISODE 28A HERO

It was Oliver's fourth day on the planet Rogos Veridis and he was feeling great. Every day was an adventure – this wonderful planet had so much to offer! The village elder had already announced the previous evening that they would go on a hike today. As soon as Oda Noba and his protégé had left the village, it became quiet. They left the hustle and bustle of the Nari behind them and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Oliver looked around curiously. They were surrounded by lush green meadows. Oda smiled: ‘Although it is very hot on Rogos, nature can flourish so beautifully because we are blessed with rain time and again.’

Suddenly, something caught Oliver's eye. ‘A statue!’ he exclaimed excitedly. ‘Does it indicate that this is where the village of Nari begins?’ Oda examined Oliver's discovery and replied, ‘This one? There are no records of it, but it was already here when I was a child. It must be many hundreds of years old. Perhaps it was created by our ancestors.’ Oliver paused for a moment, then hurried to keep up.

The two hikers approached the majestic mountain of Rogos. Oliver tilted his head back to see the summit: ‘Shall we climb Thororimgod?’

Suddenly Oda stopped and said unusually brusquely, ‘No, absolutely not! That's bad luck!’ Then he relaxed immediately and smiled,

‘We'll go along this path, which leads to a small stream. There we'll refill our water supplies and then we'll head east into the forest.’

Oliver would have liked to know more about the mysterious mountain and why climbing it was considered unlucky. However, he contented himself with an affirmative nod. Lost in thought, he opened his water bottle. At that moment, Oliver realised with a shock that he had already drunk all his water. He turned the bottle upside down and shook it. A few drops landed on the ground.

Oda handed him his water bottle and said, ‘It's good to always have enough water with you. But don't worry. We'll be there soon.’

After a short walk, they reached their first destination. Oliver walked the last part. Then he washed his face with the cold, clear water of the stream.

‘Are you hungry, my friend?’ the village leader asked while he filled up the water supplies. Oliver put his hands on his stomach: “It's strange. I am, but I feel like I don't need to eat.” Then he added joyfully, ’I think I've lost a few pounds.’

Oda looked at him irritated, then grinned: ‘Lost weight? Do you measure your weight at the Lunar Station?’ Oliver replied, “Yes, from time to time.” “That's funny, I can still learn something,” Oda answered. Oliver continued thoughtfully, ’I'm never out and about for so long at the Lunar Station. I mean, the promenade is the only way I can walk up and down. Otherwise, I sit most of the time and eat something…’

‘That's what you Mondians should be thinking about! Then you wouldn't need to measure your weight so often!’ Oda smirked.

Then he stood up: ’Let's keep walking. If you want to eat something later, I brought dried fish. Oh yes, we can take a break anytime, Oliver!’

They continued their march and soon individual trees lined their path. Shortly afterwards, the adventurers were swallowed up by a dense forest. The path was bumpy and uneven. Oliver had to watch where he stepped. Birds sang their songs and squirrels and hares leaped around in the undergrowth. Oliver enjoyed the fresh, cool air and the natural atmosphere.

His companion set a brisk pace and Oliver was desperate to keep up. But after a while, his feet ached and he felt every single muscle in his body. They had been walking for over three hours and he urgently needed a break. Oda looked like he could keep going for hours.

Oliver didn't want to be impolite, but he had to say something, otherwise he would probably collapse: ‘Oda, can we take a short break?’

The village elder nodded sympathetically: ’We're actually almost there. You'll be amazed!’

They left the narrow path and trudged through the undergrowth. Suddenly the forest cleared, revealing a small, beautiful clearing. In the middle of the clearing was a hot spring. Steam rose and a slight smell of sulfur hung in the air. A few villagers were relaxing in the warm water. They waved at them. Oliver beamed from ear to ear.

‘This is our place to relax. We do have hot shower water and bathtubs in Nari, but we don't take too much time for it. Otherwise, the others would run out of hot water. But here, everyone can bathe in the hot spring as long as they like!’ Oliver was only listening with one ear; he was desperate to dip his feet into the spring. Oda nodded knowingly and asked, ‘Shall we?’ ‘Oh, yes!’ his charge called out, taking off his shoes as they walked.

With a deep sigh, Oliver dipped his aching feet into the soothing water. Oda did the same: ‘Well, do you like it?’ Oliver closed his eyes and said, ‘It's beautiful.’

The temperature was perfect. Ares tickled his face. Nothing could take away this moment... Suddenly, Oliver heard a very deep, quiet growl. It sounded as if the noise was right next to him. He quickly opened his eyes. Indeed, on his right stood a monster! It had piercing black eyes and fixed him with its gaze. Oliver wanted to scream, but no sound came out of his mouth. He saw only one way out! In panic, Oliver jumped into the hot spring.

He stayed under water as long as his lungs would allow. But after five seconds, he couldn't take it anymore.

Back on the surface, Oliver looked around frantically. The villagers were laughing heartily. ‘How can you laugh when a monster is attacking us? Where is it?’ Oliver shouted excitedly. The village elder sat quietly next to the black beast and stroked its head: ‘Oliver, it's all right. This is Storm. He is the wolf of Kayun. He won't hurt anyone.’

Oliver looked at Oda, then at the black wolf, then back at Oda. ‘Are you sure he's harmless? He's huge!’ The village elder nodded in confirmation. ‘Don't be afraid.’ Oliver's thoughts were racing. His feelings also alternated between panic and curiosity. The wolf sat at the edge of the spring and watched him.
