EPISODE 7LUNAR SNEEZE
Astrolabius loved his rocketry lessons, but today he couldn't concentrate. His thoughts were with his dog, Shooting Star. His little friend wasn't feeling well this morning, he was tired and sneezing all the time. Shooting Star was normally a very bright and adventurous dog. But when Astro left the flat to go to Lunar School, he found his four-legged friend lying powerless on the floor and wouldn't eat. Astrolabius was very worried.
Professor John Wilkings was explaining to the class the structure of a rocket's fuselage. He made his typical big hand movements:
"A rocket must always be very light. It is also important that the nose cone is very strong, because there can be considerable thermal stress due to air friction".
Astro stared into space. He only regained his focus when the familiar melody sounded, announcing the end of the lesson.
He picked up his backpack and left the classroom. Nolan was right behind him: "Astro? Are you okay?" Astro didn't really want to talk about it, he wasn't good at sharing his feelings with anyone. But Nolan was his best friend, so he said quietly, "Shooting Star is sick. Nolan looked at him worriedly: "I'm sorry. What's wrong with him?" Astrolabius sighed: "Last night everything was fine, but this morning Shooting Star was very tired and kept sneezing. He wouldn't even play with my shoe."
Nolan nodded sympathetically, rummaged in his backpack and pulled out a chocolate bar: "Here, this will do you good. You'll see, Shooting Star will feel better soon."
Astro thanked him and unwrapped the bar. When he took a bite, he really did feel a bit better. Their next lesson was history. This subject covered not only the conventional history of the humanoids, but also the technical development of space travel.
Astro enjoyed the history lessons, but he had the feeling that Professor Eleonore King wasn't a big fan of him. And to be honest, he wasn't a big fan of her either.
Eleonore was an unpleasant person, she was ponderous and her voice was raspy and loud. Most of the time, she also made her lessons extremely boring. But today she had chosen a very interesting topic. The Professor sat in her chair and cleared her throat before addressing the class:
"How many of you know the 'Moon Man'?" Erik shouted, "Professor, would you like to tell us a bedtime story about the man in the moon?" Only Jack and Collin laughed. She slapped the table: "If you don't have anything useful to say, Stone, then shut up!"
There was a sudden silence in the classroom. Suddenly, Nolan's hand shot up. "Yes, Harper?" the Professor asked, pointing at him. Nolan hesitated, but then said firmly, "I think the moon man was Edward Gohr." Eleonore nodded in agreement and rose from her chair with a groan. "Very good, Harper. Edward Gohr, also known as the Moon Man, was one of the first scientists to believe it was possible to fly to the moon in a rocket."
Astro patted his friend's shoulder enthusiastically. He knew Nolan was smart, but he never ceased to amaze him. Professor King described Edward Gohr's life. She said that at first no one took his work seriously until one day his first rocket was launched. Then she added: "As our Director Jones so aptly quoted this morning, 'The greatest pleasure in life is to do what others say you can't do'. And Edward Gohr lived by that principle. He did things that others said were impossible.«
For a moment, Astro's sadness vanished and he felt inspired. But suddenly something hit him on the back of his head.
He turned round to see Erik sticking his tongue out at him. He had thrown a crumpled piece of paper at Astro. Erik couldn't let it go! Astro decided to ignore him. Then he sighed and his thoughts wandered back to the shooting star.
After school, Astro walked home quickly. As he opened the door, he heard Shooting Star sneeze again. Lilly turned and smiled encouragingly at her son: "Doctor Beck said Shooting Star only had a lunar sneeze."
Astro stroked Shooting Star's head, who looked up at him with tired eyes. "A lunar sneeze? Will he get better soon?" Lilly nodded, "Yes, don't worry, Astro. A lunar sneeze is nothing. Shooting Star will be back on his feet soon. Apparently some of the inhabitants of the moon station caught it as well, but they got better immediately after a little bed rest." Astrolabius was happy to hear the good news.
His mother had wrapped Shooting Star in a soft blanket and had given him food and water.
Now she looked at Astrolabius questioningly: "Weren't you supposed to help in Mrs Sun's shop after school today?" Astro had completely forgotten about his promise! The last time he had been to Kim's shop, she had asked him to help her with the next big delivery - today of all days!
"Mum... I'd like to stay with Shooting Star," Astro said meekly, but he already knew the answer. His mother replied: "When you make a promise to someone, you have to keep it. Don't worry about Shooting Star, Claire and I will take good care of him. Astro hesitated for a moment, then nodded. His mother was right, Mrs Sun was counting on him.
Kim hadn't exaggerated, there were a lot of boxes piled up in the small shop. She smiled in relief when she saw Astrolabius:
"Astro! I'm so glad to see you! Thanks for helping me." By now he had grown very fond of Kim, he liked the small, lively woman with the big grin on her face. She always had a sympathetic ear and often gave him delicious sweets. So he didn't hesitate when she asked for his help.
