EPISODE 19THE RED BOOT

The headmistress of Lunar School sat in her office, full of anticipation. She loved to get her students in the mood for the upcoming school day, and for this day she had come up with a very special motivational saying. Today was ‘Career Day’. With this in mind, Caroline Jones had invited a few parents to speak to the children and tell them about their day-to-day work. In addition, the students were to visit some stations in the afternoon to get to know the departments and workplaces at the Lunar Station. The director took a satisfied sip of her green tea, cleared her throat and adjusted her glasses. Caroline waited patiently until five minutes to eight. Then she positioned her small microphone and pressed the button to make her announcement.

Astrolabius and Nolan were sitting on a bench in the school hall. Astro was telling his best friend about his family trip in the shuttle when the familiar melody sounded from the loudspeakers. ‘I wonder which saying “the Joneses” have chosen for us today,’ said Nolan with a grin.

‘My dear students! I wish you a very good morning. Classes will start soon…’ the headmistress began her morning address. Suddenly her voice changed to a high-pitched squeak. Astro and Nolan looked at each other in confusion. A few of the children present giggled.

‘... I'm in the middle of something important here, Ridinsirt...’ There was a brief silence, then she said: “What's going on here?” Meanwhile, the headmistress's voice changed from a high-pitched squeak to a kind of whale song. ‘I wooooanted to cooooommunicate a veeeeery special message to youuuu, buuuuut thiiiiis thing...’ Caroline Jones broke off her announcement, irritated by her own voice.

The children were doubled over, and even Astrolabius and Nolan had tears in their eyes from laughing. ‘I think there's a small technical problem,’ Astro joked. ‘Not just with the announcement!’ ‘Look at this!’ Nolan added, pointing at his tablet. He wanted to check which classroom they had to go to, but the tablet's screen kept changing colour. Astro raised his head and saw that his classmates were also struggling with their tablets. Erik had the brilliant idea of slapping the screen several times with his flat hand. Still others turned to Phil the janitor. He was also at a loss, but tried to appease the children:

‘We'll find a solution to this problem soon. All students who know which classroom or laboratory they have lessons in today, please raise your hand!« A few hands were raised. »Good, please come to me and loudly state your name and which classroom you...«

But he didn't get to finish, because loud screams came from the school kitchen. The cook, Rosa, ran frightened into the large hall and shrieked:

‘There's a robot uprising! I warned you! Eventually they turn against us!’ The caretaker shook his head amusedly, stopped Rosa and tried to calm her down. But some of the children were now also unsettled and looked nervously towards the school kitchen.

Led by Principal Jones, several teachers suddenly poured into the auditorium. Caroline stood in front of the children and said in a raised voice, ‘Please, calm down! There are a few technical problems, but we'll get it under control. The technical team is already taking care of it and we will continue the teaching day! I want you to go to the gym right now. First hour is cancelled! We will wait in the gym and then listen together to the lectures of the parents who have announced themselves for today. This will certainly be very interesting!’

When no one moved, she turned to Eleonore: ‘Professor King, please escort the students to the gym.’ ‘You heard her! Let's go!’

Most of the children were afraid of Eleonore King, so they hurried to follow her. Nobody seriously wanted to risk a conflict with her. Not even Astrolabius, so he said, ‘Nolan, come on, we should also…’ But his friend was no longer sitting next to him. He searched for him in the crowd and recognised his red hair. Nolan was on his way to the school kitchen! Astro jumped up and ran after him.

He fought his way through to him and was shocked to see that Erik and his gang had Nolan under control. They were pushing him through the entrance to the kitchen when Astro caught up with them: ‘What are you doing to him? Leave him alone!’ Astrolabius shouted angrily. Erik turned to him, grinning, ‘You're next!’ Stone gestured to Jack, and they roughly grabbed Astrolabius by the arms. They pushed him into the kitchen as well and closed the sliding doors. He looked into Nolan's frightened face. The two of them tried to open the door, but Erik and his entourage held on to the handles. ‘Let us out of here!’ Erik was always mean to them for no reason. But now his meanness had reached a new peak. It was hopeless. Only now did Astro notice the enormous noise behind him. He turned around slowly, and Nolan did the same.

The kitchen at Lunar School was equipped with the most modern kitchen appliances. Most of them were larger than the usual machines for domestic use. Now the two of them saw what had frightened Rosa so much. All the appliances were switched to maximum and were working away at full volume. The stove was glowing and the slicers were running at full speed. The mixer was turning at a breakneck speed. Broken glass, a meat tenderiser, several cheese knives and other kitchen utensils were scattered on the floor.
