EPISODE 13IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE PRIMES

Always be alert and hardworking, and life will reward you," Nolan said proudly. He had jumped to his feet when Professor King asked about proverbs. Today's philosophy lesson was about proverbs, rules and wisdom. Then they would philosophise about their origin and meaning. Professor King, who was usually rather grumpy and sluggish, gave Nolan an admiring smile and praised him: "Well done, Harper! Where do you think that wisdom comes from?" His eyes lit up and he said with conviction, "From my mum, Professor!" The class laughed, but immediately fell silent as Eleonore raised her hand.

She struggled out of her chair with a loud groan and wrote this piece of wisdom on the high-tech blackboard. "Thank you, Nolan. Now someone else, please! What could this mean?"

Her eyes swept the room. No one wanted to be singled out to answer. But then her gaze found a victim, it was Oliver. King asked, "Klamsy, would you like to comment?"«

Oliver looked around for help, but he was alone on his sinking ship. He stood up and said in a serious tone: "I think this is what this wisdom is trying to tell us: If we are mindful and diligent, we will get lots of presents for our birthday. More than usual!" Professor King’s icy gaze rested on Oliver. He started to sweat. Astrolabius couldn't stand the tension any longer, he wanted to help his classmate and jumped up: "Professor King, I think Oliver was joking. Of course, it means that through mindfulness and diligence we become happier people and go through the day with a more positive outlook!" The Professor snorted, content with Astro's answer.

Oliver whispered a furtive 'thank you' and sat back down.

Most of the students didn't like their lessons with Professor King. She was unfair, loud and liked to give bad grades. Nolan didn't understand the bad mood of his classmates. But Astro liked him very much. Nolan often saw things differently, and that gave Astro a broader perspective on the world. Oh no! He was actually philosophising, that had to stop!

Professor King's loud voice broke through his thoughts: "Who's next? Stone?" Astrolabius sat up, eager to hear Erik's answer. Erik ran his fingers through his black hair and stared at the ceiling, thinking hard. Then he snapped his fingers and said: "Don't trust any strange light!" There was a brief silence before Professor King fell back into her chair, exhausted, and nodded in agreement: "Very good. That's wisdom as old as time. Does anyone know what it might mean?" This time some of the students spoke up. They knew this ancient wisdom from their grandparents. But the meaning remained a mystery. As the familiar melody announced the end of the lesson, She added: "Think about this proverb. See you tomorrow!" The rest of the school day dragged on.

Astrolabius was already looking forward to the afternoon after school. Viktor had offered some of the children the opportunity to help him sort and analyse the collected finds from his 5-year mission.

It was important to Viktor to involve and encourage the younger generation. As there was only room for a limited number of children, there was a list to sign in advance.

It wasn't easy, but Astrolabius and Nolan did it! They were very excited, it was always exciting and fun to be with Viktor Romaneschko.

When Professor Wilkings finished his talk on rocket engines, Nolan and Astrolabius packed up their school things and went with some other children to Viktor's lab in the safety zone. They were already expected. The security officer on duty led them through the long corridor straight into Viktor's lab. When the wide sliding door opened, Astro saw a room he hadn't expected.

Unlike the usual laboratories of the employees in the security zone, Viktor's workplace was three times as large and looked more like a small warehouse. There were rock samples and metal parts everywhere. Although it looked chaotic, everything seemed to have its place.

The group entered the small room and looked around. Viktor was bending over a sample that he was examining more closely. He raised his head and greeted the children with an engaging smile: "Hello, young researchers! I'm delighted that you are interested in science. Thank you, David, I can manage from here." The security guard nodded, clicked his heels together and left the room.

"Come closer, I want to show you something!" There were five children in all, now crowding around Viktor to get a good view. Astrolabius found the sight of the sample exciting and listened to Viktor's explanations:

"We recovered this sample from an asteroid near the Silk Road. I'm analysing it to find out what it's made of. What's unusual is that the sample contains traces of lichen and algae! We want to find out if these plants are related to those on Alpha Prime, or if they are a completely new species. And whether these plants have an effect on the environment in which they grow, and if so, how big they are".

Suddenly he turned and said: "All right. You're here to do something cool yourself! We have a lot of rock samples and, as you can see, we haven't had a chance to catalogue them all yet. They are already sorted by location, but if you could sort them by size and type it would help us a lot. Of course, you are free to examine the samples under the microscope. The important thing is that you wear the disposable gloves from the box over there and leave the barcode label on the stone! If you have any questions, just ask!"

A student raised her hand: "Where do the rock samples come from?" Viktor nodded, "Very good question! From many different asteroids we have passed on our journey. The exact location of each sample is documented. This makes it easy for us to work with the samples and later assign the results to the exact location in the dwarf star system. They are all unique, just like you, so please be careful with them!
