EPISODE 22SPORT FEVER

Astrolabius was running along the promenade, closely followed by his training partner Shooting Star. He had beads of sweat on his forehead and his pulse was elevated. Since Astro had seen the notice for the Lunar School's big sports festival a few weeks ago, he had been training. His visit to Alpha Prime had also been a great motivation to get in better shape. He smiled at the thought of his lack of strength during the hike in the mountains. ‘Come on, Shooting Star! We'll sprint the last few metres!’ Astro shouted, leaning forward.

He ran the last stretch to the front door as fast as he could. Then Astrolabius took a look at his astronaut watch. Today he had achieved his record time: 20 seconds faster than yesterday. Shooting Star sat down next to him and looked at him expectantly. Astrolabius took a dog biscuit out of his pocket and threw it into the air. His four-legged friend snatched the treat and devoured it in one go. ‘You never get tired, do you?’ Shooting Star tilted his head to one side and barked.

Astro smiled and wiped the sweat from his brow. He stroked Shooting Star's head contentedly. Suddenly, his stomach growled loudly. It was time for breakfast!

When he entered the apartment, the rest of the Winter family was already sitting at the kitchen table. Lilly was drinking coffee and Claire was eating her muesli with relish. Marvin was reading an article on his tablet when Astro plopped himself down on the free chair. His father looked up and said, ‘Tomorrow is the day. Are you ready, Astro?’ ‘You bet, Dad! I'm really looking forward to it!’ Marvin nodded proudly. Claire was also looking forward to the party. She dropped her spoon, jumped up, and ran around the table: ‘Me too! Look, Dad, I'm just as fast as Astro!"

The day of the sports festival had arrived. Headmistress Jones stood proudly in the middle of the sports hall and felt simply excellent. After the chaos of the last few weeks, the festival was balm for her soul. For the first time in the history of the Lunar Station, this children's sports event was taking place and Caroline was invited to open the games. The organising team had meticulously prepared the individual competitions. Some activities required so much space that some areas had to be closed completely. Even the ‘square’ in the middle of the Lunar Station and the landing sites were available for this special day. Caroline glanced at her cheat sheet, which she had written the night before. It included keywords such as team spirit, skill and fun.

She beamed at the crowd: ‘Welcome to our sports day! I'm delighted that so many of you are taking part. There are some great sporting challenges ahead! First of all, I would like to thank our station manager Lennard Cordes, who has made all this possible.’ Lennard nodded and the students applauded.

‘A brief overview of the programme: an individual obstacle course awaits you in our warehouse.’ She made a sweeping hand gesture towards the two warehouse workers. ’Sonja and Karl were a great help in the preparations.’ There was more applause, this time a little more euphoric. ‘You can also compete in the frisbee-throwing competition on level one of our promenade, take part in throwing flares in spacesuits outside the Lunar Station, and master a tricky race track with lunar cars. At the same time, a fencing tournament is taking place here in the sports hall. Professor Dumont is our representative for this.’ Philippe stood up and bowed gracefully, and the applause rose again.

Caroline continued: ‘At each station, there is a supervisor who will assist you during the games. To get started right away, I ask you to give a final round of applause for all the participants who are making this festival possible!’ Now there were shouts of joy as well as applause. ‘Then I wish you lots of fun! Master the tasks with skill and, above all, team spirit. At the end of the festival, all the points will be added up and the first three places will be awarded. And here is a nice quote to motivate everyone involved: The essence of movement is that the essence moves.

So – let's move!’

The children went to the different stations. Astros' sporting adventure began in the warehouse. He was the first to run the individual obstacle course. He waited excitedly at the starting line.

Professor Kumari, who was in charge of the station, stood in front of a blackboard and explained the process to the children: ‘The running route is marked here. Memorise the route well. There are some obstacles that you have to overcome. Each of you will run alone and I will time you. The faster you are, the more points you get. If you take the wrong route, you will lose points. So, as I said, memorise the route well, so that...‘

’Professor Kohlrabi?‘ Erik was also among the participants. Noah blinked, had he just misheard? “Yes, Erik?” he asked, irritated.

’Oh, nothing!' said Erik, turning to his friends with a grin. Jack was doubled over with laughter, Collin managed a smile. Astrolabius shook his head uncomprehendingly. Erik was like a big, annoying child.

The professor squinted irritatedly, but left it at that: ‘So, as I said, memorise the route well. Astro, are you ready?’ Astrolabius nodded and Kumari called: ‘From now on, time is running!’

Astro took a last look at the board, pushed himself off the ground and started running. He was already heading for the first obstacle, a large box, which he jumped over. Astrolabius followed the running route in his mind. Now turn left! He heard Erik shout, ‘My grandmother runs faster than that, Winter!’

But Astro ignored him and effortlessly overcame the other obstacles. At the end, a long pipe awaited him. He dropped to the floor and crawled through as fast as he could. Then he was already on his way back. Once more he turned right and left and...
