EPISODE 10THE MOON FESTIVAL (2)
Astrolabius was trembling with fear. He could see almost nothing in the corridors of the catacombs beneath the Lunar Station. Only the occasional flash of light pierced the darkness. He barely held back a sneeze as the dust was tickling his nose. Astro feared that Erik and his gang might still be nearby. At first he had run blindly through the corridors to escape his pursuers. But his strength began to fail him. He was breathing hard and his lungs were burning. When he stopped to listen, he could no longer hear their calls. Astrolabius relaxed a little, apparently he had lost them. He allowed himself to make his way more slowly and deliberately through the dark labyrinth.
He tried to orientate himself. Astro had run into so many walls that his new jumper had ripped open at the right sleeve. Damn it! When did everything get out of hand so quickly?
The problem was that Erik didn't like him because he didn't want to become a member of his gang. Astro didn't think it was fair to exclude other pupils just because their fathers weren't scientists. From that moment on, Erik had a grudge against him and he made no secret of it. Why couldn't he just leave him alone? One thing was certain for Astrolabius: he would soon tell everyone what a nasty kid Erik was!
But suddenly he stopped. Astro couldn't tell anyone, or they might find out that he'd been hiding from him in the catacombs. Then he would be in big trouble! Sighing, Astro decided to talk about this only with Nolan. That was if he could ever find his way out of here.
When he turned a corner, he promptly hit a dead end. It was too dark down here! The catacombs were complicated and had no obvious system. Astro would have loved to have Shooting at his side right now. He would have no trouble finding his way out of this labyrinth.
He turned on his heel and carefully felt his way along the wall. Now that it was quiet, he could hear his own heartbeat. Suddenly a thought flashed through his mind: there must be some dangerous reason why no one should be down here!
He quickly dismissed his doubts and focused on his goal - to find the exit! The corridor led to another room. Slowly, his fear gave way to the urge to explore.
He noticed a variety of smells: wood, iron and oil. His eyes fell on a spot where the beam of a flashing light ended.
He discovered a box of shiny metal. His sense of smell had not deceived him. Astro examined his find as best he could in the dim light. The box was about a metre and a half long and half a metre wide and stood on top of other containers made of wood and plastic. Astro was fascinated by the strange symbols on the box.
As well as many symbols that were unfamiliar to Astrolabius, he recognised letters that he could read: "N.I.C.O." He scratched his head thoughtfully, dust immediately trickled down his face. Coughing, he leaned forward and tried to shake the dirt out of his hair. It was hopeless. He desperately needed to get back to the surface. This puzzle would have to wait for him. Curious, Astrolabius took one last look at the mysterious box. Then he carefully felt his way to the next source of light. Astro hoped he would find the exit soon.
On the surface, the festivities of the Moon Festival were in full swing. Important personalities mingled with the people, a few glasses of wine and champagne were drunk and the celebrations were boisterous.
Fortunately, Nolan had also managed to escape his pursuers. He had found the ideal hiding place: the girls' lavatory. He wasn't particularly proud of it, but it had worked. When the coast was clear, he came out of hiding and went in search of Astrolabius.
He asked a few classmates, but no one had seen Astro. Hopefully he was safe, it would have been unthinkable if Erik had caught him... Suddenly Nolan's stomach rumbled. If he ate something, he might be able to concentrate better later.
The smell of cotton candy hit his nose: "Ahhhh! Just the thing!"
Dust trickled down from the ceiling onto Astrolabius again, and the maze seemed to have no end. Hopelessly, he turned another corner. Then, unexpectedly, he spotted a small window. Astro stood on tiptoe and looked out. He saw spaceships! This could only be the place! Where the big spaceships had landed! Relieved, he wiped his brow; he had become hot. Now he could finally get his bearings. He had feared he would wander around down here until he was old and grey.
Astrolabius chuckled, he was already grey from all the dust! His plan was clear: he would feel his way along this wall to the exit.
Now that he was no longer afraid, he found the catacombs fascinating. One day he would come down here again - it would be a cool adventure! But then with good equipment and, of course, with Shooting Star as his companion.
He struggled through the narrow corridors, pushing aside a few crates. But none of them were as beautifully decorated as the one he had found earlier.
Astro could already hear the noise of the moon dwellers celebrating. He was covered in dust from top to bottom, he probably looked like a ghost. He grinned. Hopefully no one would get scared when he went upstairs. There was the exit! He had finally made it! Astro took each step one at a time, looking around carefully. He didn't want to get caught, that would lead to too many questions from the adults. Fortunately, the fog was still thick enough that no one would see him. Relieved, he took the last step. At last he was on the surface again!
As Astro passed through the light barrier, a signal was sent to the LCC. The fog was no longer thick enough to deactivate the barrier. The officer on duty saw the warning signal on his screen and immediately headed for the entrance to the catacombs.
